I have played the first two games of the franchise, I can't complain, they were well made games. Great games, but at times boring too. Yeah, Mass Effect experience includes boredom too. Everyone is so much concerned about the ending of ME 3, so I thought to bring up that little detail. Well what I'm trying to say is that I'm tired of all this Mass Effect-mania. Five out of ten new topics in the forums are about Mass Effect 3. (including my post)
What's so special about this game? Why so many people consider ME as the best rpg of all times? Really, I would like to know why this game is so popular. No intention to critisize anyone, I only want to hear your opinions.

Because it's the flavor of the month. Remember how for about both a month before and a month after Skyrim came out everybody and their dog's grandma had a thread they wanted to make about it?

In about a month, the threads will die down, and then it'll be quiet for a bit...and then we'll have threads for the next giant game that apparently gives gamers free sandwiches and rides on their bologna pony with how in love with it they are.

...Come to think of it, what would that game be? Now that ME3 is out, what's the next super huge title that will infect The Escapist? Is Valve releasing anything this year?

Now if you'll all excuse me, my solvemedia is telling me to "do more sit-ups" so I guess I'm gonna go work out some.

Mostly because it's from Bioware who is known for their excellent stories and Mass effect was very well written for the most part. It was also a great game for choices and other such things, I dunno.

I suppose it was just a popular RPG.

Yes. And also becoming good at being a sneaky archer kind of breaks the game, so I abandoned my first character in her late 20ies and started over as a (mostly) Destruction wielding swordsman.

Yeah, these Mass Effect threads are starting to get really irritating. If I wanted to post on the BSN, I'd post on the BSN. There's even a "which alein did u waifu" one, for crying out loud.

Eh, I'm not that bothered really. I dig through a few forum pages to bring non-ME related threads up. It was to be expected and people are starting to discuss more than just the end, which is a-okay in my book. I give it another 2 weeks.

Yes I remember! It was almost terrifying..The annoyance with Skyrim was bigger. It started very early, last year I think, and Skyrim-mania reached its peak already one month before its release. So Mass Effect is elementary school stuff compared to Skyrim. Am I wrong to believe that it's mainly the rpg fan base that is so enthusiastic? Because something tells me that none is going to give two sh.. when the new Silent Hill game will be out, or the new Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, or Prototype.

I like your Mass Effect playstyle. It has flair.

OT: I like Mass Effect because I like space, aliens, and hot space aliens.

Mass Effect 3 has been sitting on my desk for about a week now because I'm replaying ME1 and 2 because my canon Shepard missed out on some things... Add in the fact that I work two jobs and, well... ME2's combat kinda bores me actually. Playing through it for the first time was great because it was all new. Second time it was okay. But this third time was absolutely tiring. Third time having to go through ALL the linear corridor shootout fests all over again... Blah. I could only play it for a couple hours at a time. Finally just finished the suicide mission an hour ago... Still gotta do Lair of the Shadow Broker and Arrival... Egh.

I too hope the threads die a little soon. I've stumbled upon too many unwanted spoilers, although I guess it's my fault for going into the threads in the first place.

I'm guessing the next topic of discussion will be Guild Wars 2, since it's beta is coming out soon, and maybe even the final game itself a short time after that.

While i'm looking forward to the next Max Payne game, I'm not looking forward to how upset the fans will be if it doesn't live up to their standards.
then theres GTA V, and then theres Diablo III, i could go on but i don't want to see all these hopefully good games be ruined by upset forum people and metacritc bombers.

I don't think it's a fanbase thing, just that there is a lot more discussion value in an rpg because it's your story.

UGH! I can't believe you're playing that game, with all the copy pasted areas and the shitty ending. Kirkwall is so fucking boring of a setting!!!

Eh at first I supported Bioware as a generally reliable company. And to an extent that's true today, but that reliability has turned into predictability. I'll bet you any money, no matter what their next game is that it involves a common person elevated into the position of either a unique order (Dragon Age 1, KOTOR, Mass Effect) or they're just a special person (Jade Empire, Dragon Age 2, Baldur's Gate). Then disaster will strike, and they'll be charged with assembling a team of diverse agents across the span of the game in order to stop a villain who possesses a super-weapon, or IS a super-weapon. At the end, you'll get the option of destroying the weapon, using it for yourself, or some neutral third option.

I know it's a generalization, and that each story has minor tweaks to it. But overall, it's all rather cookie-cuttered. Yeah, Bioware's got strong writing, but their plots are too predictable these days.

I've learned long ago not to let anything that happens in this closed off internet world full of strangers have an affect on me. I'm not annoyed by any of this, and getting angry solves nothing. It'll die out eventually, and whining about it only exacerbates the issue.

Far as I'm concerned, I love the setting, plot, and especially characters of the Mass Effect universe. It's a very great experience. Sure, the ending of Mass Effect 3 wasn't particularly great, but I enjoyed the journey to get there. No game is perfect, but the strengths far out weigh the flaws.

I'll never understand how people can get so worked up over video games. And worse, forums about video games. Baffles the mind, though it is entertaining to read all the passionate posts in a mean sort of condescending way... Still, can't fault me for it.

What I'm excited about is The Witcher 2's Xbox 360 release. I have it on PC, but my setup can't handle that monster. Been meaning to upgrade, but I don't have the time for it.

I've been slowly getting out of PC gaming, anyway.

At least we don't have the Tali's Sweat thread going. That's when we've passed the event horizon.

It had really good writing throughout the years.

I never thought I'd say this, but I miss Search bar Nazis. I can deal with the thousands of threads about Mass Effect 3. But before you post one, the least you could do is look to the right hand side of the screen before you start another 'MAsS EFFect 3 Ending spiolerz" thread.

It does have to do with the release, for a while people were complaining about Skyrim.

However, I feel that Mass Effect 3 had the potential to be truly epic and set a new bar of achievement for RPGs and games in general. This was the first time really that a game took a bunch of variables from previous save games of the prequel and assigned them to the sequel effecting the content. Three games deep, this would ultimately influence the ending and potentially the entire experience you got. This would have been (and was expected to be by some) a "tent-pole" in gaming history, really. Possibly the "Citizen Kane" of gaming, especially with the current structure constantly referred to as "sequelitis". This could have, and probably already has - despite the lack of follow through, influenced the industry. It was even advertising itself as such a thing.
Game Informer Interview said:
GI:With the ending in Mass Effect 2, there were so many different variables and possibilities for the outcome and what could happen. As players reached the end, they started comparing notes and trying to figure out how it worked. A few months after it came out, we ran a chart in the magazine that showed the layout of how to get the different endings and how things happened. Is that same type of complexity built into the ending of Mass Effect 3?

BW:Yeah, and I?d say much more so, because we have the ability to build the endings out in a way that we don?t have to worry about eventually tying them back together somewhere. This story arc is coming to an end with this game. That means the endings can be a lot more different. At this point we?re taking into account so many decisions that you?ve made as a player and reflecting a lot of that stuff. It?s not even in any way like the traditional game endings, where you can say how many endings there are or whether you got ending A, B, or C.

Mass Effect is a big deal because of what it was claiming to be. It is even more popular because of their lack of follow through and the controversy surrounding that. Many people who bought Mass Effect will stand up to defend it (I personally believe they are defending their decision to buy it) but many arguments and backlashes against it are justified. This game was horribly mismarketed. Some would take it to the extremity of false advertising, others will deny any such accusations, and others fall in the middle.
In the end, this game could have been epic and it simply wasn't - it was just a simple conclusion to an epic idea. Many people have varying opinions on what that means because they have invested themselves to different degrees in the franchise with the previous 2 titles in just over 4 years. That may not sound like much but it is usually a large amount of time and money to miss its mark.

Even if it somehow manages to be shit, these games won't receive anywhere near the same amount of backlash as Mass Effect will. Max Payne is a dark game. The worst they could do is have an unusually happy ending.
