If you saw the trailer for this anime Mass Effect film you'd realise that Paragon Lost is something you don't want anything to do with, it was a rather universal feeling for most who saw it. A typical example of trying to expand a game's universe will terribly animated movies and shorts. Why bother?

Well... because this movie is surprisingly good!

Initially I was only watching it because I wanted something on in the background while I did more important things, like googling my name and searching eBay. But slowly I could feel myself getting very involved.
It's the kind of movie that will grab you by the wrist and drag you through a theme park until you start having fun. And you will.

The characters are rather typical but that's to be expected of course. Nothing original ever came from an anime based on another medium.

The story line is actually pretty good, because it's small. I haven't seen many anime movies or shows (which is why liking this movie was a bit of a surprise for me) but I can imagine an anime set in Mass Effect's universe could have tried to be something it wasn't. Perhaps something silly like telling the story of the first 'reapering' or and epic about an unknown soldier who defeats all the reapers by being awesome.

It's a small story with a small plot to tell, which is humbling and also highly involving for the viewer.

Given that some of the characters are rather wooden, you will become invested in them. Some more than others. The ending will have you emotional as well.

Music was great, as always with any Mass Effect title. I've still got the song at the end stuck in my head.

There are a few unfortunate moments in anime, but that's perhaps a question of taste than fault on their part. I'm easily embarassed. They're only small moments that make you cringe like when they mention commander shepard and how awesome he is! But perhaps these were only noticeable because I watched the movie initially like it were a anateur film made by University students, every time someone says something heroic and inspiring you don't think of how motivated you're getting, it's just so cliche and embarassing you want to bury your head into a pillow.
But again, this all depends on the frame of mind that you start watching this movie with. I suggest seeing the film as the legitimate and professional movie that it is, because you're going to be thinking that way by the end anyway.

If you like the character James Vega in Mass Effect you must watch this movie, and if you didn't you also must watch it!
Before: "James is just a jersey shore, muscle bound, unlikable character with no depth".
After: ".... I freaking love that dude!"
I have new respect for James as a character in the Mass Effect series, I'll actually take him on a mission or two now.

So!
I suggest getting out there and seeing Mass Effect: Paragon Lost. I loved it, maybe that's because I don't want many animes and have nothing to compare it to animation wise. But I have seen films, and I can tell you that I really enjoyed this one. It was one of those hidden gems you come across every so often.

Thanks for listening.
