Hello everyone,

I just finished mass effect 1 and I'm looking forward to beginning Mass effect 2. Just one small problem though. I had ME1 on steam, and I have the physical copy of ME2. I have it installed, but im not certain how to transfer my character from 1 to 2. Do i need to find and move my save game file or something?

When I started ME2, I pressed the "import character" button and the menu that appeared was blank. To my knowledge, this is because the games are in different directories but Im worried that if I try to do this without consulting someone first, im gonna end up breaking something (a common occurance with me)

Sorry about this, i tried googling it but i only found various threads about the PS3 and Xbox versions of ME :(

EDIT: Thanks for the help everyone, got this sorted now.

I'm not sure, you might want to check the god-awful steam forums to see if there's already something on this. Also a steam support ticket wouldn't hurt.

I'm in the same boat (ME1 on Steam and physical copy of ME2) and I had no problem importing a character. You'll want to go into configure first from the launcher and tell ME2 where to look for your saves (should be in My Documents/Bioware/Mass effect/save).

If you have it, open up the launcher for Mass Effect 2, go to "Configure", then "Save Games", and locate the directory that Mass Effect saved to (roughly in the realm of Users\My Documents\Bioware\Mass Effect\Save).

Yes you can. I own the Steam version of ME1 and physical ME2, and imported just fine.

You just need to tell ME2 to look for the saves in a different folder. Apparently ME2 looks for them in a different folder. Open the launcher, go to "configure", and there should be something to help you look for the saves.

I forget exactly what it is though, haven't played ME2 in a while.

^ this, basically. It was the same for me and I've got physical copies of both games, you just need to configure ME2 so it knows where to look for ME1 save files.

For Windows 7:

Open "Documents" folder. In the folder should be a "BioWare" folder. Within that should be a "Mass Effect" folder. In that should be a "Save" folder. Within that should be a list of all your save games, grouped by the first name of your Shepard. But also, near the top perhaps, is a file that looks something like this:

Char_01-51-2-2-3-12-4-2011-19-54.MassEffectSave

That is your endgame save file. You then make a copy of that endgame file.

Also in the "BioWare" should be a "Mass Effect 2" folder. Open that. Within is another "Save" folder. Within is a folde titled "ME1". If there isn't a folder in there, make one. Paste your MassEffectSave endgame save in that and you should be all set when you fire up ME2.
