What would you guys think to an Age of Empires-esque RTS for Mass Effect?

Plenty of races to choose from, plenty of troop, vehicle and spaceship options.

Would you buy it? Would it work? What would you do to it?

Oddly enough, a buddy of mine was talking about this very idea not too long ago. I think it'd work depending on how it was done. There are plenty of times you could set it, The Rachni Wars, The First Contact War, Krogan Rebellions, or even during the Reaper Invasion. I'd be interested in seeing if they'd use units that WEREN'T from the big 4, humans, Turians, Asari, and Salarians. But I'd want more than just Quarians and Krogan too. I'd like to see Elcor Artillery, or some kind of Drell units. But, I'm not a big RTS player, so I'd be appreciating it from afar.

I would love to see it, but I dunno how well it would work. Would definitely be interesting, but I don't forsee it coming in the near future.

Then again... Halo Wars. xD

I'd like a Mass Effect RTS.

Though I admit it's because I really want Homeworld 3, and a space-based Mass Effect RTS might be the closest thing I get to that.

As I mentioned in another thread here a week or so ago, there was a brief moment in Mass Effect 3 when I suddenly realised I wanted a Mass Effect RTS. They showed a brief (5 seconds) birds-eye view of the ground on Earth as you were arriving, and all of a sudden I developed a desire I'd never had before.

So I'm all for it. However, I don't have much interest in playing a console RTS game, and I'm sure EA wouldn't release a PC exclusive. So I'd have to hope that they allow the developer (Bioware or otherwise) to put the effort in and make different interfaces for the console and PC versions.

I don't think it would work terribly well.

There's plenty of troops sure, but the starship and vehicle selections are kinda lacking. No heavy tanks, basically only 1 ship type per race exists currently.

Plus Mass Effect is kinda skewed towards small strike teams rather then conflicts between whole armies.

I could see the drell as being some sort of spy type unit (though that could go to the salarians as well) or maybe as snipers. What about Batarians?
It'd also be interesting cause there's the vastness of space, but also there'd be ground conflicts on individual planets and naval battles and stuff like that.

The starships aren't lacking, especially from what I've read in the codex for ME2. There's a big section about space battles and the various tactics and ship sizes and types involved.

You'd really have to take into account just how combat would work in the 22nd century, especially considering that Mass Effect does have a fairly realistic/hard-ish take on it. In short, warfare in the setting would pretty much be a more technologically superior and mobile force wiping the floor with an inferior one very quickly, rather than a drawn out conflict. The Rachni Wars, Krogan Rebellions and Reaper War were all exceptions only because each of those sides had forces so large and could move so quickly that losses were less of an issue, and the battlefields spanned much of the galaxy rather being moreso about an engagement here and there, like in the case of the First Contact War and to a lesser extent probably the Morning War.
In an ME RTS the victor would be whoever is able to maneuver their forces more effectively and not the one whose units have better inherant stats. When you bring ships and superpowerful weapons into the equation all ground units would be immensely vulnerable. Turtling would be a great way to get wiped out, and it wouldn't matter how heavily armoured a platoon of Geth Primes is, they'd still be pretty screwed when they get hit by an orbital bombardment.

Because of this a ground focused RTS probably would not work very well, though a space RTS similar to Homeworld for instance could be pretty cool if done right.

Well perhaps if it were like Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds where you had fighters as air units, then ground units with AA capabilities to balance it would be more effective. Follow this with a C&C approach to orbital strikes where a building has to be built or research needs to be done followed by a timer to stop too much ass raping.

Resources are sorted with the four from ME2, Iridium, Eezo, Palladium and Platinum. All thats left is the development of new, race specific vehicles to keep variety and it's pretty much sorted.

And as people have said it could be set during most recorded conflicts, like AoE had different campaigns for different time periods, or it could follow its own story, either a new story, or one that runs alongside the reaper saga. I personally would like to see Major Coates as the protagonist to that particular story.

I must e-mail BioWare right away!!

I personally love the idea. Bioware should be working on a Mass Effect RTS, not the next C&C.

rts doesn't necessarily mean large scale. look at what relic did with dawn of war 2. for a singleplayer experience, if mass effect did something similar except with teams of say salarian engineers, asari commandos, krogan soldiers rather than single races with multiple classes for factions; that could be interesting.

just please leave the mass effect alone, do not touch on it or breath on it. Its been broken and damaged enough as it is. Let it stew for a few more years before something like this would happen even though it would indeed be interesting.
