Overheat.

I just got into a rthym after a while that I didn't that I rarely overheated. :/

I never did understand how they went from that system to the clips... Really, thematically, the clips seem like a step backwards. Before the gun overheated, you just took cover till it cooled down... Now you actually had to stop and manually reload, one more thing to do in the heat of battle.

I much preferred overheating; it added just the right amount of strain to my sniping build. I really liked how different the approach to combat became between modding and overheating concerns.

Also, when I hit the end boss for the second game I used up the ammo for all my useful guns way early in the fight and had to spend a lot of time hiding. NOT FUN.

I preferred overheating. It meant you had to put thought into how you modded your gun, and it's really annoying to run out of widowmaker ammo halfway through a huge battle on insanity difficulty. 13 shots just isn't enough.

It would have been cool if they combined them for the third. Just have a heat clip count as 1 unit that would have the cooldown bar from the first one. If you overheat, you could quickly pop it out with a spare. Best of both worlds.

I still miss my sniper rifle modded with explosive rounds. The cooldown was fucked, but dear lord the power on that thing ...

Overheat, definitely. A hybrid system would've been nice too.

I think they changed it because they couldn't figure out how to quash that bug in ME1 that caused weapons never to cool down...

I don't see why they couldn't have done both. Keep the overheat system (maybe make the guns cool slower), but also allow you to vent all heat instantly by popping a heat sink.
Ooh, I like this idea.

I still find it absurd that in the future I have a shotgun that fires like a fucking bolt action rifle. One shot. Reload, not chamber next round, but actually reload. The high powered shotguns were shit, the Scimitar or Geth Plasma shotgun were the only two worth having.

]I'm fine with either, but the lore justification was rather weak.

I would like a hybridized system maybe. When it reaches your last clip, you just keep it in and it runs on cooldown. That way it would feel like an upgrade to have thermal clips.[/quote]

In multi-player I'd agree, but the single shot shotguns were pretty sick against high durability enemies. In ME2 I used the claymore to absolutely RUIN harbinger's shit.

I thought Bioware changed the overheating system because it made ME1 too easy.
With the right assault rifle (that really expensive one from Spectre Requisitions), some level 5 thermite rounds and a level 5 heat sink you can really break the game.
I still preferred the overheating system though because you could whip out your gun and spray people, windows etc on the Citadel and not waste ammo.
I find it really strange that every single gun uses the same clips, from a tiny pistol to a HUGE Widow sniper, one little tube cools all.
