To everyone responding with a joke about ME2 - you're not clever.

Also, I'd say that the worst thing that could happen to it is too much focus on the gameplay.

I don't play ME games for the gameplay. And probably not that many people do.
Erm...

I think we're going to have to define what you count as gameplay, and what, exactly, you think people play the game for. And if it's for story, then that is part of the gameplay essentially.
Gameplay - all of the 3rd person shooter aspects of Mass Effect.

Story - dialogue, some of the few cutscenes, choice-making, etc.

I guess you could count the story as gameplay - it's adaptive and interactive and stuff, but the core gameplay of ME is the TPS - a not very good TPS.
But surely the conversations are part of the gameplay, considering you play them out and control your character?

throw in vampires. Not some scifi retooling, but old fashion Dracula vampires.
Also, make the Council right about there not being Reapers.

A Mass Effect Point and Click Adventure Game would be awesome!

The worst thing that could happen would be a focus on competitive multiplayer.

Uhh...

Well, you don't really control him - you just choose a bunch of predetermined dialogue options.

This all ties in to that "Is Heavy Rain a game?" thing.

Really, it's a matter of opinion and definition - what I meant to say, if you like, is that the dialogue parts of the game are better than the TPS parts.

Click and point adventure I think would be awesome, we ran out of those, and I've already beaten The Dig and Monkey Island too many times, need a new one. >_<
Go get Sam & Max, it's an excelent point & click adventure series.

Regarding Mass Effect, anything multiplayer focussed would probably detract from the story telling which would suck imho.

What happens if you don't pick a conversation option and leave the game running?

Apparently nobody came up with the simplest, yet single worst thing that could happen to a franchise: a movie directed by Michael Bay Uwe Boll.
*fixed*

Not to say that Bay is much better, but we're talking about the uncroiwned king of bad video game to film adaptions here. Man must have his due
My dear sir, I truly stand corrected. Although when Uwe Boll would make the adaption it would be less hyped which means less fans will be insulted. If Michael Bay would make the adaptation, he would make a ton of sales, introduce new fans AND repel potential fans for all the wrong reasons.

It depends on what pisses you off more, a really bad movie or a less bad movie with fanboys you don't want to be associated with.

They remove all character customization, cut your party down to 3 or 4 generic douches, cut all sidequests, and throw in some swords. Basically if Square Enix took over the franchise.

The MMO thing would also be impossible to implement as there is no cannon. In fact, that would be another horrible thing to happen, that they establish a cannon.

Well, unlike Alpha Protocol, nothing.

Does that really make the dialogue sequences gameplay? Are the choices you randomly make in Army Of Two gameplay?

Well yeah, because they're an integral part of the game and your progression through it. And yeah, shitty moral choices do count as gameplay - not important ones particularly, but it's still there, and if it's not gameplay then what is it?

Is everything in a game gameplay then?

If the reapers turn out to be just messing with the galaxy for shits and giggles and have no real higher meaning... or just if they turn it into a generic FPS.

The only thing that would kill the Franchise for me would for it to turn into a fugging FPS with a focus on multiplayer a la Call of Duty. If that were to happen, I would be incredibly skeptical of the game and very unlikely to buy it - especially at full price.

Other than that, and silly browser/smartphone apps, I would give any incarnation a pause for thought.
