Oh, Bioware, you crafty bastards.

So, after seeing all the rage around Mass Effect 3, specifically the ending, I decided to (finally) try Mass Effect. The last Bioware RPG I played was KOTOR, and I loved it. I will withhold my opinion on Mass Effect in general to avoid fanboy rage (captcha: don't tase me), but here's a nice little fact for you people. Dr. Manuel, the "prophet" spends his entire conversation with you sounding like a madman. THE END IS NIGH! THE AGE OF HUMANITY IS COMING TO AN END! NOTHING YOU DO CAN PREVENT IT!

I couldn't help but giggle, knowing what expects me when my journey into more recent RPG's reaches ME3.

Thoughts?

its a fun game, currently replaying it through myself with fem shep.

Its interesting seeing how the old game set up a lot for ME3, what changed and what didn't. You might notice one or two errors as you go between games depending on your choices but otherwise you'll enjoy the ride.

and hey, by the time you get round to ME3 the ending may be more palatable.

I always thought that one of the themes of Mass Effect was humanity findings it's place on the galactic stage, finding a place in the galaxy among the other established races.

Turned out I was wrong and it was Organic vs Synthetic. Sigh.

Yeah. They really missed an opportunity there.

Bioware always craft these amazing worlds, then fuck it all up by telling the same story over and over and over and over again.
I wouldn't call them "amazing" but you are correct. They lose a lot by not trying something new and more engaging.

But BioWare don't have that many worlds - the Dragon Age world (Warhammer visits D&D), Jade Empire (I don't know, haven't played it) and Mass Effect (I am willing to give them that one)

I take it you haven't actually reached the ending then?

We do in fact stop the reapers, the problem isn't that it's a sad ending or anything. A space-wizard-god-child appears and pretty much just lets us win. It tells us we can either control the reapers and make them leave, or kill them. Also we get the chance to "merge" organic life with synthetic life (which apparently just means putting weird green lines on everything). Then most of the galaxy explodes with either a red, green or blue explosion.

So yeah, we really didn't have this one coming. It came out of absolutely nowhere, and made no sense on a very basic level.

There is a fan theory about the good doctor, which goes

He reached the conduit first, understood what I meant and then went mad(er).
