So basically people living near the north and south poles are going to see some light shows(aurora borealis and whatever the antarctic version is called).

All the particles hitting the earth will be safely redirected to the poles by our magnetic field and dissipate harmlessly in the atmosphere. That's even on a direct hit btw. Though yeah it could disrupt communication satellites.
