If it wasn't already obvious that bow ties are cool. There are official figures to support it!

In his first episode on April 3 2010, Smith declared "bow ties are cool" and it looks as though fans agree.
Topman (a UK based mens clothes shop), whose shoppers ages' are the target audience for the TV programme, shows a range of 12 bow ties on its website.

A spokeman for the store said:

"Since the new Doctor Who aired we have seen a dramatic rise in bow tie sales, in the last month up sales have increased by 94%.
"Last week alone they accounted for 14% of all our tie sales - whereas over the last 6 months [before Smith's first episode] they have been only taking around 3% of our tie sales.
Yeah it's an old article, but I thought it was worth sharing that bow ties are cool financially! And I have yet to own one. Yes that makes me sad.

Also, here's a little (true) story about the origin of Smith's bow tie.

?Well, it?s a bizarre story the whole thing?? Steven begins. ?We were so far down the road with a completely different look. Costumes had been made, fittings done, we were heading towards the first photo call - mere days before the first day of filming. We had a different look altogether, a bit more pirate-y, big long coats and all that stuff - and Matt hated it all, so we knew we were in trouble. He hated everything. On the last day - in the last half an hour of the last day we could make this decision - he asked if he could try this jacket. I think it was his, this old tweedy jacket with elbow patches. So he put that on, and he liked that, he liked his tweed jacket and his elbow patches. Then he said, ?Could I try braces?? So he put the braces on, and I?m thinking, ?Yeah, that?s not bad.? It wasn?t spectacular, it was just okay.

?And then he said, ?Can I have a bow tie? And I said, ?Absolutely no. Under no circumstances are we having a bow tie! It?s retro, outdated, ridiculous, it?s a pantomime idea of what Doctor Who is like. We are not having a bow tie!? But Piers said, ?Just let him try it with the bow tie.? So we stuck a bow tie on him and it just looked fantastic. Instantly! And you could tell that he, for the first time since the costume fitting started, was leaping around the room pretending his pen was a sonic screwdriver, and absolutely believing it! Beth [Willis, the third executive producer] had popped out for a while, so we got her back and I thought, well, ?Surely we?ve just gone mad, so let?s see if Beth thinks this looks okay.? She came back in and she loved it. Girls sometimes just smack you round the head and say ?No, you can?t wear that, it?s ridiculous!? But she didn?t - she loved it, too! And that?s the reason I signed off on it that day. I mean, he?s a clothes horse, Matt, he looks good in anything. But he just stood there in the other costumes chewing his lip and looking miserable. When he wore the bow tie and the braces and the tweedy jacket he was honestly jumping around the room with his pen going ?Fzzzt!? being Doctor Who.

I still have the photographs on my iPhone."

OT: No really a bow tie fan myself. I prefer ties.

Windsor knot, if you please.

Matt Smith rocks the 'ironic statement' bow-tie, whereas the James Bond style bow tie is just a straight-up smart look.

This reminds me of when sean connery came to my house. He put up a shelf for me, but when he put the bond boxset on it, it collapsed. He shook his head, look at me and said:
"I'm Sho ashamed of Myshelf."
That's gloriously funny and gut-wrenchingly not at the same time.

I'm laughing and groaning. I'm loaning.

Bowties were cool.
Then hipsters started wearing them. Now I can't wear a bowtie without feeling like a massive douche.
[sub]Wow, I feel like some kind of meta-hipster now.[/sub]

Not that I normally used bowties before that, mind. I use a bowtie when I wear a smoking. That's is.

So this whole bow tie thing is actually kind of a writer in joke....Awesome :)

I wonder if number 9 made leather jackets more popular. Or 10 those shoes, whatever you call them... :p

I read that as 'Matt Smith makes cool bow ties' and assumed he'd designed so bow ties for Topman or something. Now I'm disappointed.

If Matt Smith wears bow ties ironically, does that make him a hipster? D:

I'm not a Doctor Who fan, but he doesn't make me want to wear a bowtie. He looks like the younger brother of Bill Nye the science guy.

We need these pictures! All of them! Especially Pirate Doctor!

Also, I suppose you already own the official 200₤ bow-tie replica?

Only when he wears the Glasses of Irony. They have the power to turn a normal person into a hipster instantaneously!
I was wearing 3D glasses ironically before it was cool...

Just for future reference, the £ sign is placed before the number, unlike the $ sign and other such currencies, so this would be written £200

I dissagree, he wears it totally un-ironically. Almost negative-ironically. Like a child wearing his shiny yellow boots on a sunny day. It's this childs utter belief that the boots are absolutely stunning and because the belief is totaly honest it works. That's the way Smith wears his bow-tie and that's why it works.
