Final Fantasy Tactics. The original one, not the advance ones. If you could decipher the plot, it's very good.
why does everyone say the plot was confusing? i was in middle school when i beat that game and i understood it perfectly.

Personally, I feel most FF games after V have dealt with heavily mature themes. VI has a wealth of war-related trauma, VII deals with general insanity from both the protagonist and antagonist, VIII is, all in all, a serious game, even though the time compression probably sounds silly, IX has fukn existentialism, X is basically an allegory for false religions, and XII is incredibly political.

It's just that there are references to battles and events that we have no understanding of except that they happened and why they are relevant to the plot.

I really got to get round to playing Xenogears, but can't really find it on ebay for a decent price. So I may have to resort to emulators. I also am trying to get my hands on Shadow Hearts: Covenant, which looks like a ineteresting mix of maturity and zaniness.
There is an emulator which runs Xenogears perfectly. I wouldn't feel too bad about playing it that way because it's not like squaresoft is still selling it. I usually run it now on emulator with an iso I ripped from my own copy.

I was going to recommend Persona 3 & 4, but looks like you've already been there.
Yakuza's 1 & 2 would be my recommendations, maybe just 2. Not strictly rpgs, realtime martial arts combat, but set in massivly deep worlds were you can get lost for hours, and blow all your cash on a handbag for an escort girl, who doesn't like it anyway.
Shenmue 1 & 2 would get my recommendation too. If you've ever been curious as to where sailors hang out and providing you own a dreamcast.

I love all the final fantasy games, but I'm not going to argue that they're mature. tbh they all suffer from saturday morning anime cartoon syndrome, especialy x (and of course who could forget the ff remake of Charlie's Angels, the shocking X-2)

Lost Odyssey was a real disappointment for me, totally forgettable, and possibly a nail in the jrpg coffin which would be sad.
I was also conned into buying xenosga II, which for some reason i thought it was a direct sequel to xenogears ( always wanted to play it, but it was never released in the uk , after we were told it was on its way for like 2 years).

It's more of the anime inspired wackiness variety. It's dark and has an interesting, but not mindblowing occult storyline but I would never recommend it as a mature JRPG. Fun game though, much more engaging combat system than most games like it.

Wouldn't go as far as calling X an allegory on false religons, but other than that bang on imo.

I've only played 1 but it didn't seem like a JRPG in any way.

And yeah, any Shin Megami Tensei game or Xenogears should suit you. Or Final Fantasy if it suits you, as that series takes itself very seriously, although it's not humourless.

I'm sorry. I like Zelos too much to do that just yet. I still have Raine, Presea, and Zelos to get through before then, I think.
Presea and Regal's were absolutely lame. Sheena's was my absolute favorite, but that might just be because I like my women... fiery.
I'll second that. Sheena's was my favorite, while also being my favorite character from that game

OT: Pretty much anything from the Shin Megami Tensei series, most of which have been mentioned, but I'll throw up a recommendation for Nocturne since it hasn't been mentioned. Just good luck finding a copy

I played Nocturne after Persona 3, and it never quite clicked ... just an endless dungeon crawl with aspects of pokemon.

I'd recommend final fantasy (especially 7) for deep-as-a-game-can-go-without-screwing-it-up plots also Gantz has plenty of well-endowed women AND massive gore + violence AND a surprising deep storyline with characters that aren't just walking sacs of flesh to be cut open with a tendency to kill main characters as though aren't immortal and extremely resilient to injury (they are at times but at least there's a reason for it better than genetics or something similar)

Worth noting that Nocturne was called Lucifer's Call in Europe so that might muck up some searches. You also have better luck finding it than Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army the prices for that in Europe at least is the worst of the lot. Though this thread has reminded me I need to get the digital devil games.

Edit. They need to hurry up with Shin Megami Tensei 4, was announced a while back but seems to have vanished into development non-existence. I need more of these games dammit.

How has no one mentioned VP yet >_>

Valkyrie Profile, the original is definently worth looking at centres all around death and regrets all of the characters have somehting unique or interesting about them and hell its one of the best JRPGS ever made. The second one abit more light but still very much worth alook especially if you like all that norse mythology theme stuff.
