Hi my fellow escapist members.

Yesterday launched the PC version of Max Payne 3 and I was excited to finally play it.
After an installation with 4 CD's I had to notice that the game just wont start. The game launches and it shows me the first screen with the copyright stuff. And then it just crashes.
I tried to launch the game several times and was able to play it 2 times. But now I just wont work anymore.

I tried diffrent things like:
> re-installing
> disabling antivirus and firewall
> updating drivers
> administrator mode and safe mode
Does anyone else have problems like these? I wanted to make this thread in the Rockstar forums but it looks like they dont have official forums.

I started the game with "right click --> start in save environment". It goes to the [press Enter to start] screen and then it either crashes or says that there is a problem with the licensing and I should install the game again.

Working fine here, the only issues I've encountered so far is poor keyboard support - not all keys are bindable, I play with the cursor keys on the right side, and some keys are hardcoded (Enter, Home).

Actually, where is your game installed? And what Windows OS?

My OS is Windows 7 and i installed it in the predetermined directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Rockstar Games\Max Payne 3 (retail vesion btw.)

I checked the R* and they wrote about updating .NET 3.5 but if I try to it looks like I dont have .NET 3.5 installed. And when I try to install .NET 3.5 it gives me an error.

The weird thing is I was able to play the game 2 times by trying to start the game over and over again and it worked. Now it just crashes everytime.

My husband is currently trashing the [main] comp with rage over his steam-based MP3. The steam support thread got to 23 pages within the first evening and he has re-downloaded the whole 3 gigs 3 times now, done all sorts of patching and workaround adding and making sure everything even remotely related to security was down. No luck, and no luck for his friend who has a character modeled after her own face! You win a contest to get yourself added into the game and then you can even play it. This is why I wait 2 years before buying new games, gives everyone a chance to find the game-breaker bugs, patch them, crack them or mod around them.

Then again, we have Riven (made in 1997) on steam and no matter what we do we can't get it to play past a few frames after the initial cut-scene.

Don't actualy own the game so i have no knowledge of its settings, but this is somthing i've had to deal with in the past on several titles, specifically the heavy resource consumption games like skyrim and the witcher 2, i can play them both perfectly fine but if i crank the settings too high they will both crash within a few minuets of play, so if you havent tried lowering your settings turning off anything like depth of field and motion blur etc, i sugest doing so it may help to stabilize the game, even if your pc is more than good enough to run it on higher settings its still worth trying.

I've had similar problems with LA Noire (another Rockstar game) and they were also related to .NET framework. Tried literally everything I could think of and long chats with Rockstar support (who weren't terribly helpful, beyond telling me to reinstall .NET and VC Redist).

Eventually came to the conclusion it was a hardware compatibilty issue with .NET and short of replacing my components one at a time I had no idea how to fix it. So its sitting on my Steam list til I make my next computer.

Hope you have better luck though.

For both problems, try running in administrator mode. Right click on the .EXE, Properties->Compatibility tab.

In the case of Riven, one thing I've noticed is that a lot of older games like to write saved games and configuration files into the game folder, but Win7 likes to restrict file writing to the user's home folder, and prevent write access to the C:\Program Files\ folder. Putting it in administrator mode should allow the game to write whatever it needs to the game folder, as they probably haven't been updated to respect the new format.

I rarely encounter this problem because I installed Steam to my D: drive, basically a dedicated games disk, so nothing ever gets installed into C:\Program Files\.

It just drives me crazy that I got it to work and now it wont start. I had the option to buy it on xbox 360 but thought the PC version would be better and now I cant play it. I hope R* releases a patch as fast as possible

Well, that's actually a fix I've not heard before. I might try that at some point, thanks.

EDIT: Tried it, game still crashes about 5 minutes into actual gameplay. It's fine though, just adds to the innumerable other games I can no longer play. Can't even remember half of em.

I tried to run it in administrator mode but it doesnt make a difference. It starts, shows me the copyright blabla screen and crashes

So I started the game in safe mode and it worked. If I set the settings higher the game has to restart. And now it stopped working again. What is the difference from "normal mode" to safe mode?. My PC should be able to run the game fine on the highest settings. I dont want to play it in safe mode with directX 9 and low graphics ;_;

We got MP3 working finally, it was a problem with .NET where we were TOO updated, lol. We had .NET 4 but MP3 can only use 3.5. Game still has some crashing issues, but it's playable now.

If any of you have this problem, you'll need to uninstall .NET 4 before you try installing 3.5, as they don't overwrite each other.

This doesnt seem to be the problem you are suffering from but with my game it kept giving me "ERR_OS_XP32" long story short steam was launching in compatability mode for windows xp service pack 2 despite the fact that I use vista(x64), basicly the game wouldnt launch at all.

So after some searching I found this and did exactly what was detailed in the first post.

http://www.edugeek.net/forums/gaming/39417-fix-steam-thinks-its-running-compatibility-mode.html

And since then I have had no problems with Max Payne 3, except for some weird save game issues that I'm trying to sort out. Game itself is immense, really really impressed with it. It's like playing diehard/man on fire :O

@Isalan ['cuz apparently using BBcode is too hard for this site]

You, too!
Wow. Thought it was just me in all the world that suffered this indignity!
I bought that game mere minutes after it came out. Never successfully played it. The main screen just sits there.
R* Support have been next to useless, though the second support guy I got tried a little harder.

Which leaves me in the unenviable situation of not knowing WHY the MFs cannot get this sh!t working for me, and consequently being really, really, really reticent to buy another R* game, no matter how dang good they are. Which is a buggar, really, 'cuz, quite aside from MP3, V is coming and it'll be the first GTA I'll never have played.

odBilal's experience (I too have updated .NET 3.5, run in Divine Mode, etc) just puts me off buying MP3. I can't afford another $90 game sitting on the MF shelf collecting dust.

Curse you R* for f-ing all this up.

If you are having issues installing .Net then try this tool. It removes all traces of either a particular version or all of them, allowing you to then reinstall.

Looks like another fine port by Rockstar. I haven't played their games in a long time due to how shoddy they always end up on PC.

I wish you all the best luck!

Necroing mah thread! :D

Does that only happen if you play it on hard? Maybe reinstalling will solve the problem.
