So, currently learning how to use maya and what I want to do is create a flame effect that acts as the default light source in the final render. Now when i go to the dynamics menu > effects > create fire > options and set intensity to max (1) the brightness is not high enough. Was wondering how I can create higher brightness level so it can act as the light source.

I am not familiar with Maya, but maybe put some reflective surfaces, or even more fire effects behind the render camera. But as I said I am not familiar with Maya or the project you are working on.

Not sure if you can. In most 3d progs lighting and volumetric effects are totally independent of each other so if you want an effect to look like its a light source you have to put a light source inside the effect envelope... can take a lot of time and experimentation to make it look right, though.
