I am a student going to Mcmasters university in Hamilton, Ontario, and I would like to ask; What kind of stuff would I need to get for my first year there, and is there anything I am expressly not allowed to bring into the residence, as I'll be living in residence for at least my first year there.

What a hilariously named school...

You're probably better off asking the residence authority at the school, bud.

I'd bring a gun; it's Hamilton after all!

I went to Waterloo, but for residence all I needed was clothes, my computer, bed sheets and a mini-fridge to keep stuff. Even with just that my res room was pretty tight on space. It came with a desk, closet, char, blinds, etc.

As someone who's lived in dorms for the better part of a decade, bring less stuff than you think you need. Don't bring appliances and big ass TVs and three lamps and a couch and contingency supplies for every situation. Just bring what you need and a few things you'd really like to have. If you need or have room for more stuff, you can get it later. Bringing too much stuff will make your room uncomfortably crowded and will probably piss off your roommate. Also, if you have your future roommate's contact info, get in touch with him and see if you can coordinate what you'll bring (ie he brings a fridge if you bring a TV).

Rule of thumb: If all your stuff can't fit in one reasonably sized car, you're probably bringing too much stuff.
