I have no sympathy for all you saps who were like, "Oh, you're ugly and annoying? Come on my ship!" I bet every subsequent playthrough you will tell her to go to hell. Amiright?
ROFL. I have completionist disease. I couldn't possibly leave her behind, just in case she said/did something important. But my word, is she ever awful. I've had 2 conversations with her and I'm already ready to pronounce her the most annoying NPC in Bioware history. Even more annoying than Noober.

PS - I seldom do "subsequent playthroughs". I do one playthrough in which I try to do absolutely everything, and that playthrough becomes "canon", and I have difficulty playing again and doing different things because it's a deviation from canon and it feels weird.

I have heard she does nothing more than off 5 asset point. LOL!

Buddy, I'm the guy who crawled through every last musty tomb in Skyrim, prying 3 gold pieces out of every cobwebbed urn when I already owned every house in the game and had enough money to start my own continent. 5 asset points? THEY MUST BE MINE.

More hopefully spoiler-free questions - The DLC, how is it? Is the game lacking without it? Is the character still in the game (albeit not as a squadmate) if you don't have the DLC?

I'm curious to see how much of the pre-release rage was unwarranted.

When you say auto dialog, you mean that its been replaced by trigger events where you press down on the left or right triggers, or auto as in, your previous paragon renegade like stances guide the direction of the conversation without any input.

Also how do you know its auto dialog?
The latter. I know it is auto dialogue because in options I have it set for being able to give input on every available dialogue option. Some scenes begin with Shepard saying a whole paragraph before I am asked to give input. The trigger events or "interrupts" are still there as they were in ME2, albeit less frequently. I think they realized they went a bit overboard with the amount of interrupts in ME2.
Ahh but I loved the interrupts in ME2. Although it could be a bit frustrating if they went too quickly and didn't always imply what they would do.

I live in the UK so I have to wait a little longer yet :(

Hey, yeah...remember a few posts back, when I complained that the urgency of the situation was at odds with the leisurely pace of RPGS? Looks like Penny Arcade is on the same page.

I started playing yesterday, and while I felt the game started out kinda slow at first, it really picked up when I had access to the Normandy again. The fact that this game is giving me the same feeling I get from playing the last two games is a very good sign of things to come.

I kind of like how they brought back some elements from the first game, i.e., health that doesn't completely regenerate so you have to rely on med-kits again and weapon mods. While at the same time the gameplay is still as smooth as it was in ME2.

It also seems like Bioware was listening to their fans as I have seen squadmates interacting with each other. Which I thought was a really nice touch.

Overall, I'm finding this game really fun and I look forward to playing more of it.

6 or so hours in I think, really enjoying it.

The combat feels vastly improved, and the immediacy of the story is really gripping imo.

I am actually very surprised this thread doesn't already exist (guess everyone who owns it is taking a sick day and playing it right now) so I will take this oppertunity to lay out my impressions of the full game thus far. I'll avoid anything plot-oriented Bioware's marketing hasn't already talked about and focus primarily on the broad scheme of things. I played it for roughly 4 hours last night and if I don't cover it here I'll answer any questions you guys over in Europe/Australia/etc. have. I will list a few pros and cons, but I feel Q&A is a better way to do this.

Pros:

- Combat has greatly improved much to no one's surprise. Controls are more responsive and the powers/weapons feel like they pack more of a punch. Its also really fun hunting down all of the weapons and mods on a battlefield. Feels RPG-y in that sense.

- Bringing it back: Right from the get-go the game invokes the spirit of the first game. As someone who romanced a certain romance option in ME1 I was surprised the topic came up within the first hour of gameplay. A lot of the interactions with returning characters are fun and interesting without feeling like fan-service.

- Banter has been greatly improved and has been pretty insightful/funny so far.

Cons:

- Auto-dialogue: At this point I am sure you guys have heard, but yes, there is a lot of auto dialogue. From what I understand your automated responses are supposed to fall in line with your alignment as my Paragon Shep is usually a pretty nice guy when auto responding, and I would be fine with it if it wasn't so damn prevalent. Note that in most non-big story moments there is a lot of normal ME dialogue give and take and that most of the auto-dialogue happens in missions and during big plot scenes.

- Character models/animations/etc: I don't know what happened between games, but some characters look completely different now. Whether they are prettier now or uglier I think Admiral Hackett is the only human character that doesn't look different from ME1 and 2. Liara looks weird and it bothers me. Some of the animations, as I am sure you guys have heard or seen in the demo, are just straight up goofy.

- Un-synced dialogue and buggy cutscenes: If you thought this was bad in the first two games.... The game also seems to be a bit moire unstable than ME2 was. I experienced a hard-freeze at a load screen and my 360 sounds like its mining the damn disc constantly. I installed it to the HD last night so I will see if it runs better after work.

Overall I am having fun with the game so far and enjoy the story despite feeling a bit railroaded. Well, I don't have much going on right now: fire away with questions :D
About the same for me, really. As for the Character Models, I think one of the things about why they look different is that there's so much more details. Liara (and all asari, for the matter) always looked smooth-skinned, like a human, yet with the amount of detail in this game, we now see that asari skin is actual broken into individual tiny "scales".

I too have experienced the buggy cut-scene animations. In one conversation my Shepard had her head turned completely away from the person she was talking to, as though she were trying to go all Exorcist on the salarian and have her head spin all the way around.

As for the auto-dialogue, eeeehhhhhhhhh...while I don't like that it takes away from the control of the game, I get it. Specifically when speaking with your squadmates after each mission. They all have something unique to say after each mission and really I don't think you need a full-blown conversation for that, besides you really don't need to keep going and checking for new conversations just to have'em say "Come back later, fignuts."

That said, however, the conversations with squadmates had previously been to delve deeper into their back-stories. Granted, with a few exceptions, you already know everything there is to know about your squadmates (if you've played the previous two games, that is). So realy, it's like I said in the above paragraph, my feelings on the auto-dialgoue are "eeeeeehhhhhhhhhhh..."

Things I love: the look of the game is beautiful. I also really like the weapon system in the game...narrowed down from the tons and tons of crap-weapons in ME 1, and yet a much wider selection than in ME 2. Also they've brought back the interchangeable mods for your weapons so that's pretty sweet. I also liked how there was no dicking around with the story, no hour of BS before the shit hits the fan. It's pretty much exactly what you've seen in the trailers: (spoiler use only for those who haven't seen a trailer or otherwise don't know what the first 20 minutes of the game are).
The game opens and within 10 minutes Reapers are already raining down on Earth
Also: Scanning solar systems is back...though extremely watered down and, if you're in a Reaper controled system, can actually be kinda fun!

Things I don't like: not so certain I like the "Weapon Weight" system. Yeah, it's cool that any class can now use any weapon with equal proficiency, but one of my least favorite things in all of gaming are games that put some kind of limit on your inventory...games like Oblivion and Dragon Age. Because then you find yourself in a dungeon, you find some kick ass loot, and it becomes "Ahhh fuck, what am I going to drop to make room for this?" Well in ME 3's case it just makes your cooldowns take a bit longer, but still, I've never been a fan of weight systems. Also, it seems as though a couple of the choices made in previous ME games were negated...anyone who's been to the Citidel already likely knows what I'm talking about. Also, we've come full-circle and have returned to the "Tedious Running Sidequests"...seriously, just like in ME 1, I spent a full 2 hours running around the Citidel doing sidequests. Buuuuut at least in this game's case, all the sidequests do at least allude to being for the good of the cause and helping out the war effort. Still...that's a LOT of running.

All in all it's everything I wanted it to be: a great game that I'm thoroughly enjoying.

Oh, and apparently there was a glitch with the receipt printer at the GameStop that I went to...I had preordered the standard game, not the N7 Collector's Edition...yet my receipt was printed with a code to get the free character DLC. He comes with a beam-rifle that fits in the assault rifle slot...this beam can essentially be turned into an "elemental" ray-gun. A lightning stun-gun if you use Disruptor Ammo, a Freeze Ray if you use Cryo Ammo, and a Heat Ray if you use Incendiary Ammo. Also: it has infinite ammo with a clip that recharges after a few moments. :p

So... wow... this game gets depressing in the middle D:

Though the humor is still here. I just did a quest involving our favorite fan which referenced at least 3 random ass sidequests from ME1 all at once. It was hilarious.

EDIT: Oh wow, more ME1 sidequest references o_O

She looked fine to me. I actually liked the texture work they did on her.

ANDERSON looked weird. SHEPARD looks weird. Liara looks fine.

It's her eyes. They did something weird to the shape/size of her eyes.

My pros of ME3
-Combat is fun.
-I can use a sniper as a weapon as a Adept (OMG I LOVE THIS!)
-The heavy punch or how I like to call it (Falcon punch) with Adept is fun and funny to watch when it contacts.
-Characters are looking not bad compaired to the demo. The only slight negative is that some of the characters look a little constipated.

Cons
-If you have not played ME1 or ME2 or if you have decided to play this game without the previous save file the choices in the game are just.... dear... God. I mean some of the events in the game just made me drop my mouth for a second and ask Bioware... Why?

When you choose at the beginning of character creation you have the choice to choose between multiple characters, Kaiden, or Ashley as the people you got killed. Despite I put down Kaiden as the KIA. Somehow Wrex was dead too. wtf?

-The whole buy the From Ashes DLC. I wanted the character you get in it. I found charging you was stupid though. As well the accent for this character I find odd....

-Not much details on Shepard's past actions. I mean really? If you jump right into ME3 and not have any knowledge of the other two games and play this alone. You will be staring at the screen and think, WTF is her problem? Or, why is my character angry at this group, or why is that character angry at me?

Edit:

Oh one last Con.

10 minutes in the game and I want to have him fly back to Earth to 'hold the line'

Spoiler free? So far I am getting this impression.

As a quick summary with no spoilers. I have not seen any reason why s/he is NEEDED to be in the game as with or without this character, your progress is on the same level to stop the reapers.

The character will add in flavor (comments from Joker about Liara made me laugh my ass off) but aside from that the character is just one more added to the squad role.

In my opinion the character is fun to have because of their history in the game and their interactions with other characters (Liara in particular) but overall with or without this character your mission remains the same with no added benefits for the war effort. Aside from an extra hand to help.

It's funny. In the trailers she looked downright weird. The first time I saw her my reaction was, "Holy crap, what did they do to her face? She looks like a plastic fish!"

But in-game she looks fine and normal.

Might be a resolution thing.

I know that the planet scanning mechanic is back, but what changes have been made to it? Also, is there any planetary exploration involved?

And Ass good as she is, the DLC Squadmate is the best character in all 3 games combined.

Really? I wouldn't know, haven't bought the DLC yet. I'll maybe do that for a later playthrough.
