I feel this generation is severely lacking in the giant-mech department. Last console generation had numerous series and franchises, including the stellar (albiet short) Mech Assault series.

This gen seems to have no love for those robotic monsters we know and love. Chromehounds has been shut down, Front Mission Evolved is mediocre at best, and Dynasty Warriors Gundam just doesn't feel 'heavy' enough, in my opinion, to be considered a true mech game.

With the technology we have today, I want to see more Chromehounds, I want to see elaborate set-ups like Steel Battalion. It's a market that is now largely left untapped nowadays, methinks.

Does anyone else miss mech games? Anyone have any knowledge of some recent entries in the theme?

As always, thanks!

The most recent game I played involving mechs was Lost Planet 2. I know it technically doesn't count, but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Does commanding an army of Chaos Dreadnoughts in Dawn of War II count? :p

I just wish someone would remake Heavy Gear 2 and the old Mech Warrior Games. I agree that we are severely lacking in mech games, and especially mech games that make you feel like you are in a mech, it isn't any good if you can't step on regular infantry or tanks.

Well, you can technically call Vanquish a mecha-game. It has highpitched action you are in a mechsuit.

And even if that isn't true, you should still play the game.

As long as it isn't those crappy anime mechs, I'm all for new mech games. I really loved Mechwarrior and Frontmission.

I wish they would make a Chromehounds 2 that rewards creativity and is never shutdowned...
I loved CH, but eventually everyone just used one of 3 mechs.
Also, no leaderboard achievements...while I managed to get over 700g on my old account, I doubt I ever would have gotten the Gold Medals. (Thats another thing I loved, you got in game medals (er...decals) for each achievement, and they really were "achievements".

Obviously you haven't heard of Hawken.
O_O

Thank you kind sir.

I had not.
I can't believe as a Western Mech fan, you hadn't heard of this, there's been two trailers debut on the Escapist so far. Anyway, yeah, last Mech game I enjoyed was Mechwarrior 3 (and pirates moon). They felt big, they felt lumbering, it was all very beautiful. Mech 4 was a massive disappointment. Felt like I was just driving a kid's plastic toy, and they didn't so much as 'walk' as 'hover along the field with their legs moving'. I did play Mechassault, and I didn't appreciate that either. The more recent trailers for a new Mechwarrior game looked to have promise, but slipping into the 'too good to be true' category, which seems justified as everything has gone pretty bloody quiet about it for a long while.
see

I hope Hawken turns out to be enjoyable though. Not EXACTLY the sort of thing I'm after, but hey, I won't really care as long as it still turns out to be fun.

My fave mech game of all time was Steel Battalion, hands down... After all these years, the sequel to the lord of all mech games as well as the game with the most badass controller in history has decided to go with the kinect as its control scheme. I'm not saying it can't be done well, but at the same time, I fail to see how the kinect could possible compete with the experience of the original Steel Battalion controller. Kneel before the might of the original Steel Battalion controller... KNEEL!

Dunno, whenever I've had the urge to pilot a giant lumbering death-machine I've either gone back to Mechwarrior 4: Mercenaries for a bit or delved into the bloody fantastic Mechwarrior: Living Legends mod for Crysis.

By this point I've played probably ten times more of Living Legends than I have the actual Crysis game, go figure.

I dunno, personally I have been hoping Bandai will come out with a few of the Gundam games in Japan (there is a Gundam styled Battlefront, just to name one) but I guess the fan base is too small in the US to make it worthwhile.

I'd play a decent mech game no matter what, just as long as there's physics involved and I'm not playing the now closed Exteel.

Now, judging from the responses I've read so far this might not be the game you're looking for, but I particularily enjoyed playing Armored Core 4a. It had a lot of kinks in it but what it did well, it really did well. Combat is really fast paced and probably the best I've played in a mech game, the customization is incredibly well done. In fact, about half of the battle is decided by how well you design your mech. However there are going to be some things that you might find disappointing about it. The scenery is horribly rendered compared to the everything else and the mission structure and storyline is not done particularily well. Also it is geared a little more towards anime mechs than western ones, although I'd say it's still playable by fans of both.

There hasn't been a decent mech game since Mechwarrior 3. Microsoft killed that franchise when they turned it into Mechassault and made it Xbox-only.
That Crysis full conversion looks nice, as does Hawken, but they're only multiplayer. I'm a single-player kinda guy. I want something with a long campaign to play through.

Once MGS: Rising is out of the way, Kojima promised us that he will deliver Zone of the Enders 3. I cannot wait for that :)

give the armored core series a go, you can make nearly any style of mech you want, and theres agood variety of titles to choose from, my opinion is the best titles of the series are on the PS2 (armored core 2, 2:another age, 3, 3: silent line, nexus, and last raven)

i think its more Bandai does not really care about the US market at all, besides the only decent gundam game to ever come out was '0079: rise from the ashes' on the dreamcast
