Someone brought up being anxious about wondering what was in a booster pack of magic cards and that reminded me of how I was with the first base set pokemon cards and even more later with yugioh packs.
So I want an thread about things that purposefully get you addicted, such as pokemon, but more necessarily the outlets they use such as booster packs.

Is it just me or does this thread not make much in the way of sense?

You want an episode that gets people excited or addicted to booster pack for a card game?

No, I think it's an episode about things that get people excited or addicted to themselves. Apparently, bonus points about card game and booster pack.

That's what I got out of it. But I have no idea an episode of what.

You did better than I did. I was actually ready for a real discussion on media addiction. As, at times, I feel I succumb to this. For instance, if I get really into a show (usually an anime) I feel a strong compulsion to finish it. Sometimes leading me to marathon a show for 16 hours on both Saturday and Sunday, whatever it takes.

Yeah, I know that feeling. I (re-)read the entire Dresden Files series in about three weeks. Everything before Changes (I was getting ready for the release), so 11 books. That was a less than a book a day, but mainly because I was working for a good part of it and hence I needed sleep, too. I am perfectly capable of doing a book a day, though. Which really disturbs me, because if I like a book, I finish it too soon and I don't have anything else to read.

Similar with other series, say anime. If I have other stuff to do, I'll just set my laptop there and glance often at it while I do it, if I can divide my attention, for example, if I'm cleaning or something.

Yeah, I think books are the worst for me too! A gripping book is just too hard to put down. I do, at least, have the common sense to stop if I have to work or whatever the next day. But weekends are another issue. It's not uncommon to stay up until sunrise reading when the book is good enough.

I suppose we truly are "escapists" then :p

Ah, I see. That makes more sense now (btw, you changed to "thread" but didn't change the article - it's still "an").

Anyway, for other purposefully addictive stuff, how about MMOs and Skinner Box games? They do make you play them. Many a WoW player would say "Yeah, I'm only playing because of my guild, now" or something like that. They aren't playing to have fun, they are playing for the sake of playing - because they need to rather than actually want to. Yahtzee also brings it up a lot. Especially in that Cataclysm ZP episode.
