Media that breaks the mold

Oftentimes, I find myself watching anime that tends to go against what their typical genre is. As an example, I'm a bit of a Nanoha fan, it being a magical girl anime that thinks it's a mecha anime.

Are there other pieces of media, be it audio, visual, or tactile, that you find to be entertaining but seems to ignore what genre it started out as?

I don't like the 'Special Girlfriend' genre of anime, but I'm a huge fan of Urusei Yatsura.

Every now and then, there's a drama show or movie I like, but I don't like the genre. Other than that, I can't think of anything.
