Checked to see if this was posted yet, and I didn't see a topic on the first two pages.
After four trailers and tons of hype, Capcom has canceled Mega Man Universe. This is likely due to the departure of former developer, Keji Inafune (we miss you) and the boycotts towards Capcom.
Personally, I don't mind this. The game looked like the fanfiction game for the franchise.

I'm guessing you're not a retro gamer. Let's look at the overall franchise (portables aside, as I haven't owned a portable system since the black-and-white Gameboy and don't count portable games as canon).
Megaman 1-3: stellar gameplay that upped the bar for the whole metroidvania/contra genre(s).
Megaman 4: still really good, long and difficult, involving and fun.
Megaman 5-7: stale in spite of a graphics overhaul on 7.
Megaman 8: glorius, inventive and fresh.
Megaman X: a fantastic evolution of the earlier games. Vibrant, involving, very challenging and ultimately fun.
Megaman X2-X8: stale, aside from a few interesting gameplay mechanics in some of the later games.
Megaman 9-10: a fun throwback to Megaman 1 and 2, and super-challenging, but still ultimately stale.
Megaman Universe would have been a great next step for 2D Megaman games, especially with the level editor. The 2 1/2D design did look like crap with the "Megaman" model (which was crap), but there was always the Rockman model (which actually looks like Megaman) and the others. Other than that, the game looked fantastic to me.
Personally, I'd like to see a Megaman game that mixed 2D and 3D by using those moments from the old 8-bit games where Megaman freezes and the screen dramatically shifts to the right or left to transition instead into the third dimension. But I also wanted a Metroid game that didn't feature a Samus with battered wife syndrome
