Mega Man Universe Cancelled

Capcom announced today that production has ceased on the console platformer Mega Man Universe.

Rumors of a reboot of Capcom's lauded franchise from the 8-bit era first surfaced in April 2010 when Joystiq discovered the trademark filing for the game's title. Then a few trailers and details were released, stating that Mega Man Universe would be 2.5D platformer in the vein of Mega Man 2 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Like Little Big Planet, players would be able to design their own levels and share them with friends and the general public. The game also would have been the first Japanese release under the name Mega Man as the franchise has always been referred to as "Rock Man" in that country. Unfortunately, that won't happen, because Capcom released a statement on the game's website today saying that all work on Mega Man Universe was ending, citing "various circumstances."

Mega Man Universe was scheduled to come out this spring, so it comes as a surprise for it to be cancelled so late in the production cycle. The "various circumstances" makes me wonder if game development was affected by the earthquake, tsunami and subsequent nuclear problems in Japan.

If so, I'd like to extend condolences for anyone working on Mega Man Universe. It sucks to learn that your game is being cancelled.

This is the first I've heard about this, but it seems like it could have been something amazing.

Ooh, I hadn't thought of that at all. Another version of this article I read elsewhere suggested that it might be because Inafune left.

Although I don't see why they should cancel the game over the earthquake and such. Delay, sure. But why cancel?

One thing is for sure: I would like a REAL answer from Capcom about this. "Various circumstances" is bullshit.

It probably did have an impact and may have been partly, if not all, to blame.

Theyre probably shifting production to Megaman Legends 3. Probably, i can never call it quite right with Capcom.

If it's due to the problems cause by the earthquake/tsunami, then I will not be one to fret over it's cancellation. I was looking forward to this, which is odd because I've always sucked at Mega Man games.

OH GOD YES!

Then they can focus on making Rockman Online.
Which Escapist, despite my PMing that as a tip, STILL haven't written anything about.
What, really? Do you have a link to that? I'd love to see them try more interesting things with the franchise.

Kinda sounds like something they already did on the PSP a few years back: "Megaman Powered Up"

Guys. It's March 31st. Anything and everything could be a prank. They could release the game tomorrow for all we know.

I don't trust anything in the media from March 30th to April 4th. Ever since Wizards pranked me with their My Little Pony RPG in 2006, it has been nothing but torment.

Capcom already denied me Mega Man Powered Up on the Playstation Store to play on PSP Go (after they said they would get it on there). Now they denied me Mega Man Universe for unclear reasons, so I can't really be mad or sympathetic, but I can be disappointed.

But if I don't get some Mega Man Legends 3, heads will roll.

This is a really cruel April Fools joke. Seriously, couldn't they have been a little less subtle? They probably gave some Mega Man fans a heart attack!

Eh, from everything I heard and seen, the game wasn't all that great to begin with, controls were odd, jumping and platforms were wonky, stuff like that. I wasn't all that interested to begin with, so seeing it get canceled is just a "meh" in my book. But if it is a sign of what might happen to Legends 3 well...

You want a katana, or buster sword for that? I got blades, and I'm willing to pimp em out for that cause.
Screw that; get the freakin' Z-Saber.
Anything that can two-shot Sigma would be sufficient in channeling my rage right now.

Bring back Megaman X and ill be happy.
That's what it seemed like Megaman Universe was gonna be, since according to the teaser picture, Sigma was the main villain.
I would have been SO happy... But if MML3 gets cancelled, well, I can't be held responsible for my actions.
