And God said to Moses on the sabbath day...

"Let there be Megaman 9"

Matthew 3:23

...And it was good...

The highly anticipated Megaman 9 has descended to earth from the heavens for all of us gamers to enjoy. But is this the blue bomber at his best or just an attempt to cash in on our childhood? Actually, both of those things are good in the case of Megaman 9 for all the current platforms; Wii, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Megaman 9 brings back all of your favorite Megaman characters without any of that battle network or X crap you've come to expect from the series. This is an honest to goodness sequel in the ORIGINAL Megaman series that dates all the way back to the days of the NES.

[Story and Writing]

Megaman 9 tells the story of Megaman and Dr. Light. It seems that Dr. Wily is up to his old tricks again. Instead of trying to take over the world like other times, Wily frames Dr. Light of out of control robots to take attention from himself. Megaman sets out on a quest to rid Dr. Light of these allegations and clear his good name.

[Sound and Audio]

The sound of Megaman, from the effects to the music, are simply breathtaking...in that way they did years ago. Everything is like you remember it back in the day. The music is great, but in my opinion, not as memorable as other previous games. All the sound effects you remember from previous games are back and i've never been happier to hear them again.

[Graphics]

Compared to other XBLA, PSN, and Wiiware games, Megaman 9 is VERY dated in its look. But to all us nostalgic gamers out there, Megaman 9 has never looked better. The graphics are as you remember them with a bit more color. Levels look better and more detailed than they ever have in the series and all the enemies retain that classic feel. They too have been given some more physical features. MM9 retains that classic NES feel and I could not be happier for that

[Gameplay]

Megaman 9 plays almost identical to the other games in the series, even recent MM games like the X series. You move around with the D-pad or Analog stick, depending on which console you are playing on, and jump with the predetermined button. You can shoot or use powers with the fire button as well. Everything is as you remember it from previous games in the series.

You choose from one of the eight bosses and you traverse their levels until you encounter the boss themselves. Each boss has a power that can be retrieved with their defeat. Like other MM games, certain bosses are weak to certain powers like with Megaman 2, bubble man was weak against metal man's power. Megaman 9 is no different. Find the bosses weaknesses and you will breeze through this game...or will you.

Megaman 9 gives gamers the same level of difficulty we've come to expect from the series...and by that I mean it is difficult. New gamers are in for a rude awakening when they TRY to play through Megaman 9 and realize that "This game is freaking hard". The bosses may be easier when you figure out the patterns and weaknesses, but the levels will kick your ass and rape you for hours. This is how Megaman has always been and if you aren't ready for it, then you are playing the wrong game.

I consider myself a seasoned gamer who grew up with Megaman, but Megaman 9 is just plain tough. I can get through most of the games in the series with no trouble, but this game really tested my skills and i'm not afraid to say that it won.

[Final Verdict]

Megaman 9 can be beaten pretty quickly when you know what you are doing. Because of the nostalgic feeling, gamers who have experienced the previous games will DEFINITELY want to download this game right now. For those who haven't played with Megaman before, you are is for a surprise.

Megaman 9 is the greatest gift that Capcom has given us recently and I cannot thank them enough for this trip down memory lane. This is how games were played back in the day, difficult and amazing at the same time. I love Megaman 9 and I consider it in the top 3 best of the series along with Megaman 2 and 3. You do not want to pass this game by.

I give Megaman 9 an 8.5 out of 10. Bless you Capcom, bless you...

I'm not a big fan of the bracketed [graphics] and [gameplay] format. Writing should flow more smoothly than that and reviews of the different elements of a game should read seamlessly and (usually) blend into each other. It's a sign of an inexperienced reviewer, I think.

Agreed, but it is good for early drafts of a review, at least, to have those sections clearly defined by headings, don't you think? It sort of helps the reviewer keep tabs on all of the aspects of the game while he writes his review. However, those headings should be removed before the final draft of a review, just to make it look better.

I absolutely agree that the first draft should follow from the outline, and having the outline visible in the first draft is a bit like having the preliminary linework visible in a half-finished painting.

But to leave it in the final draft is amateurish, like (simile fails me) having the ductwork visible in a house because you forgot to put in the ceiling.

Well-put, SimuLord.

I've gotta write a review one of these days....
