Memorable Game Overs

Firstly, I must point out that this thread is about a video game's in-game Game Over sequence, not funny ways in which you acquired a Game Over.

Now that that's out of the way, I think Sonic CD had one of the most surprisingly frightening Game Over sequences I've experienced. Keep in mind these two things: 1) I am a pansy and avoid scary video games and movies whenever possible, and 2) this game was intended for little children, so nothing in it should really be frightening. In any of the other "old school" Sonic games, the Game Over jingle was a little saddening, but it still had the same tune as Sonic's main theme, so it fit with the rest of the music. Oh, but Sonic CD was different.

Picture this: you're an innocent lad (or lass) playing a game featuring the spiky speed demon himself, Sonic the Hedgehog. You get careless and hit one too many spike traps. You have no more lives, so naturally, you expect a Game Over. However, this isn't like the jingle from Sonic 1 or 2. No, instead horrifying organ music plays as you are heckled by a collection of hellish laughter. I couldn't believe it the first time I heard it. It was like after Sonic 2, Dr. Robotnik became Satan himself and losing the game damned you to experience a small taste of the terrors of his nightmarish kingdom.

Okay, a lot of you out there are probably laughing at me right now, but I don't care. I still find that Game Over music to be genuinely terrifying.

So, what are some of your favorite Game Overs? They don't have to be scary; in fact, I generally prefer the funny ones.

I think the game 'Total Distortion' had quite a memorable game over if you lost to the guitar warrior.

I treats you to a game over screen where a whole song is sung, 'You are Death', I believe. It's quite funny and pretty epic, I sure laughed when it happened to me.

That tops it. Even better if you have watched Solid Awesome or Awesome Snake.

Real Life. You only get one of those.

/thread.

K, in a game... Hitman: Blood Money. You get a few last useless seconds of bullet time, eyes covered in blood, knowing you're about to die, to fire away your last bullets or run your last yard.

The whole "And they were never heard from again" gameover blurb from Tales of Symphonia stands out to me only because the first time I read it I shouted at the tv "What? That's it? After all of the trouble that's all that's to be said??"

Of course this isn't a game over sequence, but the continue screen from Sonic 2 always made me laugh. Sonic standing in the dark with a white light under him giving the player this incredulous "C'mon fucktard, and lets try not to get me killed again shall we?" look always made me giggle.

The way you described Sonic's look on the Sonic 2 continue screen is hilarious yet absolutely true.

The Game Over sequence in Hitman: Blood Money was kind of memorable. Even as you die, the screen gets gradually more red as time slows down, and you can even take down enemies as you're dying. It's sort of satisfying to take down the punk that killed you with your last breath.

I also remember seeing a lot of the Devil May Cry Game Over screen (wow, wonder why that was...)

Sonic's drowning music has always been stone cold nightmare fuel. One of the litany of things that modern Sonic games don't do right, failing to have significant underwater sections where you have to keep looking out for air.

Just about to say something similar. 5 ... 4 ... 3 ... *crap, I should have waited at the last one* .. 2 ... 1 ... [bubble noises and sonic's speed stops and you sink off screen].

I love the House of the Dead ones where you get a little animation of how far you went and what route you took.

well its not really a 'game over' screen but any time you get nailed with artillery in BF2. You're lifeless body shoots like 200ft in the air.

but who could forget the ol' Mortal Kombat 4 game over screen? Your character is tumbling down a well and unless you restart you continue to fall until you get impaled on some spikes :p/

I'd say the Kingdom Hearts one: when you reach 0HP, Sora's heart leaves his body, and it just floats there... I don't know why, but it just pops into my head (maybe it's because I saw that thing so many times...)
