We've all done it at some point. We all know the dread that sets in when it dawns on you that you had the wrong slot highlighted, thus turning your save with 80+ hours of gameplay, oodles of cash, some goddamn awesome gear and a license to kick ass anywhere, into a 30 minute "Oh, maybe I'll play it as a mage this time" pile of crap.

Or maybe you lent it to a friend, and they saved over it, or worse, deleted it for no reason.

This thread is to serve as a memorial to those lost saves. Post your tales of woe here, so that we may offer condolences and such.

For me, it was Soul Calibur 3. A neighbour's kid came over and wanted to play on the PS2, so I set him up. However, he couldn't read and instead of starting the game, deleted my save.

I've rebuilt it since, so it's not all lost.

...How old was the kid?!

EDIT: I've restarted Oblivion five times just to see what it was like being a mage, fighter, orc, tiger ect...

Magical Melody, my Chao Gardens in Sonic Adventure, and my Mischief Makers data.

Not to mention my 135:26 pokemon blue version which my cousin not only deleted, but ruined the game to the point it wouldn't save at all anymore.

OH! and my metroid prime data. Damn little brother.

Back during when Pokemon red was new... Let a friend look at it, he turned it on, started a new game without telling me, and saved... I had all 151 (I don't just mean pokedexed, I had literally all 151 in my boxes!)

I also have a similar pokemon story. I lent my fat-ass ***** of a cousin my Pokemon Red - she saved over my file. I had played for over 100 hours, and I had 138 pokemon. When I loaded it, I had one pokemon, and she had picked FUCKING CHARMANDER as her first pokemon. Needless to say it was a little overwhelming for my 12 year old self.

To my Bioshock, Call of Duty 2, 4 and 5, Crysis, Fallout 3, Galactic Civilizations 2, Red Alert 3, Command and Conquer 3 + Kane's Wrath, Dead Space, Far Cry 2, Star Wars Empire at War, Republic Commando, Half Life 2, Mirror's Edge and Prince of Persia save games.

I'm sorry I couldn't back you all up before my computer melted. All those save files... gone... in one instant...

Lylat Wars (Star Fox 64). I had finally managed to take the hard route, killing the real end-boss. Next day, my save was gone. I think it was someone visiting my younger brother who did it by accident. Never managed to reach the real boss again :(
Not that I bothered trying much after that. It had taken several weeks getting good enough!

I'm in a similar category, except it wasn't a friend
I think the game said 'Hey everyone, watch this, it'll be funny!'
And deleted my save for no reason
Its actually the battery in the cartridge that hold the saves that died out, but I like my version better
Gaming can sometime hurt me...
But it brings more happiness, so its okies

100% Onimusha 1, 2 and 3. I don't know where they are. But I always look for them and remember I've deleted them. :(.

The one I thought of first was my Final Fantasy X save game at literally the last save point before the final boss. I started saving it, and my girl at the time had accidentally tripped over the power strip and hit the power switch. She made up for it later (Giggidy), but the stupid thing is that I normally stagger my saves, except I didn't this time for lack of space, the next closest save was quit far back, and on a different card. Blargh. Sure I have more, that's just the one that popped into my head first.

Grand Theft Auto San Andreas. I had only a handful of missions left to get the game to 100% completion and my disc ended up dying on me. So I went and purchased a new copy just to see that my save file wouldn't work. Apparently the old GTA San Andreas save files didn't work with the new hot coffee free discs.

If I had a game save for how many times I've been through that... *Sob*

To Little Big Planet and every other game i had saved on the ps3. The PS3 was broken and before my fiance took our ps3 back to get a new one he saved his files and not mine, so i lost all of my saves.

When I was quite younger my older brother accidentally saved over my file on Tony Hawks Underground 2. I was quite upset because he refused to acknowledge that he had done anything wrong.

It was a dickish move on my part, but a friend of mine back in the day was playing tomb raider 2 and was quite far in the game. He had paused the game and had left the room(for reason unknown at this point) so I made Lara Croft swan dive off a really high building and right before she hit the ground I saved over his previously saved files. So when unpaused the game she died and when he reloaded the game the she died (at the time it was hilarious)

I don't recall what all was on it, but I know my Mega Memory card was nearly full. All the save data for all of the games on my PS1. We're talking FF7, FF8 end games with all subquests, Tomb Raider, Twisted Metal.....

My niece stepped on it. Snapped it right in half.

Yeah, this is pretty much exactly what happened to me when playing Final Fantasy X; my friend came over, wanted to start a new game and saved it over my 100+ hours save file.

I've been pretty anal about save files ever since; I usually make at least 4 saves minimum when starting a new Final Fantasy game, just in case...
