Look, I don't want to sound overly alarmist but even before the show aired, I heard some issues of it here [http://irisinabottle.kinja.com/cross-ange-tenshi-to-ryu-no-rondo-exclusive-episode-1-1638457731?rev=1411537491933]

Now that people from Anime News Network [https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/preview-guide/2014/fall/cross-ange/.79579]have gotten a hold of it, it looks like the problem isn't gone.

for those who don't know, I will give a summery. Apparently the main charcter, Ange, after being exiled away gets raped by a female guard anally in a very distrubing scene and then undermines it with the preview that is "a reminder that this is a bishoujo robot show and all we've seen is the bishoujo".

I've avoided the show due to the preview which made me detached from the show if the horror is true and it may seem that more people are saying the same thing.

"Here's info about an out of context scene including rape!"

What actually happens is she has a thing implanted onto her spine in that scene. She isn't being raped.

You can say the same out of context gibberish about Berserk too. Doesn't mean it's not one of the best things ever. Why do you need to sound the alarm? To protect people's sensitive sensibilities? Sounds kinda silly to me.

This sounds utterly sensationalist, pointless and all in all an effort in trying to make a big deal and spurn outrage out of nothing. You don't need to base what you watch on previews, especially not such highly sensetionalized ones. Not unless you're uber-unfamiliar with the genre and don't know naruto from gurren lagann or something.

It's just one more scene in one more anime, the end.

There is no context given. Thats a problem. Its meant to look like rape and arouse the viewers. Thats all is to it. It's not rape yes but it looks like rape and thats enough ruin the whole thing. Tone doesn't match the theme of the show.

Since when is an anime developing in ways not matching the theme of the show a bad thing? Everyone loved Madoka for EXACTLY this reason. It starts out at one thing then becomes completely different.

No, this is an excuse. A logically inconsistent reason to complain about something which you'd complain about anyhow, finding other straws to grasp at if this one wasn't there.

Also, this is just the first episode, there's not even an established theme yet. That reasoning is faulty in twofold ways. Even Madoka took longer than part of the first episode to establish a theme and go against it. This show hasn't even had the time to establish a theme by the time the scene happens. Madoka just did so with little girls getting their heads eaten rather than through medical procedures which some people think look like butt-sex so people being true hypocrites ate that shit up.

Oh boy.... I wounder how would Elfin Lied's First 10 Minutes get interpreted now. Oh well will just keep my eye on this one cause I got enough animes this season.

EDIT: Ok I started the show(its on CR) and well I found out its by Sunrise them pulling something questionable in one of the episodes is not beyond them. I mean you don't have to look that far to see Valvere the liberator about one year ago HAD A FUCKING RAPE SCENE. So yeah I am not suprised but digging this mecha design. So yeah guys nothing beyound WTF Japan and people who don't get it whining again about something that they should be used to by now or just not watch.

Edit 2.0: Ok still do not know if that scene was nessarcy but its was about equal to Valvere the liberator's one. So sunrise still being sunrise folks.

There is a difference between change of tone and just writing bullshit for shock value or masturbation material, if you find this fap material good writing you can masturbate to it all you want. I also recommend avengers 200 you might like it.

The point is this isn't the first nor will it be the last. It's just "one more heavy fanservice show". Nothing to go defcon 5 over. There's been multiple actual rape scenes one could masturbate to in multiple great anime. Ever watch Ninja Scroll? Berserk?

Don't make a big deal out of nothing.

WTF Japan is not an excuse for me or many other people. Japan is not some abnormality in culture; the way it treats rape is almost the same as America does which is to say "you better be damn careful not to be tasteless". Also, if Sunrise has done this before, WHY WOULD THEY DO IT AGAIN, ITS GOING TO BACKFIRE.

A few more points

-Why go through the rectum to operate on the spine? There are several inches between the rectum and the very tip of the spine and that's not taking into account the twisting nature of the lower intestine and the thickness of the intestine wall. Also, why the lower spine? If you want good neurological signals, the back of the neck or the brain are better signal receiving areas.

-Why is there a scene of naked women fondling each other after the credits? I know that being stuck what is essentially a prison with other women around you will lead to circumstances but why did it have to be on screen? Is it to show how society has changed like in Brave New World or Shin Sekai Yori because I am very doubtful of that.

-What is so intrinsic to women that only they are norma? Is it the extra x chromosome because that would imply recessive traits which would be eliminated by now given how long these programs have probably been going.

-Why would the brother mate with his own sister? History has shown that repeated intermixing of family members like this leads to deformities and also make it easy for the families to die off. If it's just for "i'm evil", then there are better ways of doing it than sodding inbreeding.

This show is not worth making excuses, it's just tasteless. it's spiteful and hateful and deserves to be in the garbage.

And I am ok with you thinking that way. Just strange some of the show I though would be the most tastless end up having some of the best plots I seen in anime(Not GITS or Fullmetal territory but up there).

WitchBlade

Hyakka Ryōran: Samurai Girls

High School DxD

Elfen Lied

just to name a few I just wanted to watch for the pure baseless fanservice then less than 3 episodes end I was watching for the FREAKING plot?! Its weird, very weird but then again I could be wrong and this is a Queen's Blade Mecha then I will drop it fast(Queen's Blade is worthless shit tier). Still its one freaking episode and its Sunrise. I have reasons to believable this could turn out great and given the Sunrise rule the one tasteless scene per season or show is already gone I have nothing but mecha fun to look forward to. Oh and I have yet to see Sunrise bad scene trope cause a whole show to flop.

This for those who try to defend this. http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/MoodDissonance
Education people! If you try switch tone of the series you better know how to write then because if you fuck up you deserve no praise. Switch of tone and mood dissonance are two different thing.

I'm sorry but after Valvrave, my opinion of non-gundam Sunrise has tanked to 0. Buddy complex made it up a bit but Cross Ange has tanked my opinion to negatives. Fanservice and good plot are not exclusive; I will argue till the day I die that Kill la Kill has a good plot but if you have to use a rape in the first episode to get a point across then you have failed at writing.

And mood dissonance only works as a joke. Example kill la kill uses it great effect. In it characters use revealing clothing which makes it's combat scenes hilarious at times. This shit right here isn't a joke. It's framed in such a way it is disgusting. If you are gonna go stupid go all out like kill la kill. Just throwing rape analogies out of no where will ruin the whole series.

You shouldn't be sounding alarmist at all. Now, if you hear about ISIS getting their hands on nuclear weapons or China declaring war on the US, feel free. This...this is an anime. A shitty anime, from the sounds of it (not that I was ever a fan of Sunrise anyway), but it's an anime.

I decided to check it out, just to see what you're talking about.
-I'd just like to say, the opening sequence with the main girl singing into battle would've been cool, if it weren't for their GODAWFUL outfits. It's obvious that this is an ecchi show.

-Also, is it my headphones? Or is the sound mixing really bad? Why are the voices all in the left channel? It's seriously straining my left ear.

-"You must forget her, and bear another child. A proper child, not a Norma."

Did I... did I just hear that? Did the princess just say that to a grieving mother with a smile on her face? That's horrible! That's one of the most awful thing I've heard coming out of a supposedly "loving" character, who everyone in the city admires. And then they proceed to put the crying child in a glass container like she's a pet snake. She then later goes on about how Normas are mutant abominations and how she plans to eradicate them, with no signs of remorse or empathy. THIS is the character we're suppose to be rooting for? In any other anime she'd be portrayed as the villain. Sure, they later reveal that she's a Norma herself, but that doesn't change the fact that she's a terrible, terrible person.

-Also, we're never shown why Normas are apparently so hated in this universe. We're only told that they're monsters. There's nothing to back that up to warrant the reaction the reveal gets from people.

-And then we get to that particular scene. I'm with you on this. It's a disgusting scene, and not in a good way. They excuse it by saying it's "just a physical", but it's obvious the intent was to humiliate. As much of a horrible person the princess is, no one deserves to be sexually humiliated. It still doesn't make me like her as a character, though. She's still awful. Also, the anime had done nothing up to that point to deserve a heavy scene like that, and was completely tasteless throughout. Like some had mentioned, the way it was shot and framed made it seem like it was meant to titillate rather than disturb. It didn't help that with the camera angles and revealing clothing beforehand was clearly meant to get some arousal, and immediately after that scene they cut to a room full of naked women.

-Also, it seems everyone got so into the moment that no one realized nor cared that the QUEEN HAD BEEN SHOT! Instead of apprehending Ange, how about apprehending the Queen's murderer? Or are they gonna just pin that on Ange?

-The female officer hinted that she was also a Norma. You're telling me that with the way Norma's are treated that she gets the position of an officer, yet the PRINCESS turns out to be a Norma and gets exiled and ridiculed?! So a Norma officer has more authority than a Norma Princess?

So far this is an ugly, mean-spirited, despicable anime.

Sigh... so, anyway, how 'bout that Fate/Stay Night Prologue, huh?

Well it got me interested in the anime and I am going to give it the three episode try at this point. Sunrise has its weird moments but I dig the mecha designs to I am here for the ride for a while still have plenty of show to fall back on if this doesn't go up in quality. Still I giving this show a shot. Thanks OP ;)

A "rape scene you can masturbate to" is never ok. I don't care what medium or genre you're working in. Maybe the rest of the anime is good but that doesn't mean that a sexy rape scene should exist in anything ever.

I'm interested in why you say this.

Do you feel the act of watching a stylized rape scene would influence the player? Or more along the lines of pure distaste?
Also, what are your feelings on the depictions of violent death and murder in Western media? Should games like Bully/Manhunt be forbidden to be made due to their influence on children and/or their distasteful imagery?

This is anime we're talking about here, so it's always going to be quite stylized, thinking back on Jim's video dealing with the stylized violence having little to do with actual real actual death and violence, could the same thing be said about anime rape scenes?

Why, because you say so?

Now, I sure as hell am not into that, but as long as the people involved in the work were consenting adults, and it is an optional watch, I don't see why it can't exist. Believe it or not, people like things like that, both men and women.
