Meta-Games

Meta games, How do you feel about them? If you don't know what a meta-game is, its a game that involves a link to the real world through a different media. Such as a game that can use trading cards to get powerups, or a game that uses a code that was broadcast on TV.

I personally love them, but what do you think about them escapist?

They use tp be amazing. Pokemon did it for a while, but then the internet came along and just went "Everyone can have everything! Here are all the Codes!" That ruined, so i beleove they use to be good but they've had their moment.

for me it was always metagaming, research out side of the actual game. for example in 40k learning how to build a better list is metagaming, and the story fluff is also metagaming.
OT i am ok with metagames but they seem to be more like a way to make more money for a company.
