(I looked for this but couldn't find it in the (recent) forums, so forgive me if it's a repeat and feel free to delete it.)
Looking around at some of the threads coupled with one of the D&D pictures I'm working on right now got me wondering - how many of my fellow escapists have a meta-gaming moment that they regretted, especially if it could have changed the outcome of the game you were playing?
Myself it was my first campaign. I was playing a vampire rogue/shadow dancer who ended up getting the Mind Rape spell cast on her by a wizard we had fought several times (natural 20's do nothing with a low will I'm afraid). DM took me out of the room and told me what happened so no one else would know and basically ruled my character now thought the wizard was her husband and long time traveling companion. The wizard had been fairly obviously flirting with my character throughout the game, mostly calling her pet names so it fit.
Long story short it was our final battle with him, our bard was in a protective sphere and nearly dead, the Cleric was almost out of heals, and the Druid was on her last legs. Rather than popping over and killing her outright, I meta-gamed and went after the ranger, who I knew would probably take me out once he knew I was on the opposing side, with the +1 fire/holy bow I had. I ended up unconscious, and the wizard ended up dead.
I always felt a bit of regret about it because the DM said there had been a very high probability of TPK, one we were all feeling by the end of the fight. Would have been a much different ending to the game had it been.
