Long and frequent cutscenes overflowing with atrociously written dialogue. And on those rare occasions where the gameplay put in an appearance, it was pretty fucking ordinary.

I threw the disc in the bin after a few hours.

I think it's biggest crime is that it's boring. I mean sure, previous games had brutally long cut-scenes and atrocious writing but at least they were played up ironically and the all batshit insanity that happened on screen was actually fun. MGS4 is just a slogfest, both in gameplay and cut-scenes.

It's a badly written, badly edited, overly wrought, boring movie with few gameplay segments randomly thrown in.

Ok, i'll admit there are some problems: It's a little bit overly focused on action in some points, but then again there have always been these points in every Metal Gear Game (MGS 1 The Jeep part, MGS 2 fighting the Tengu's, MGS 3 the bike escape part).
The action sequences mentioned in the previous games always came at the end of some twenty to thirty hours of tense, sneaky, infiltration styled gameplay. They were a major reward, and usually were part of the, you know, climax. When you get one every ten or fifteen minutes, and in fact half the game (that you actually get to play) is made up of these sequences, that's a little disappointing.
