Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Was MGS5

Hideo Kojima's upcoming PSP stealth action title Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker [http://www.amazon.com/Metal-Solid-Peace-Walker-Sony-PSP/dp/B002BS47TE/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278970595&sr=1-1] was indeed originally meant to be a proper, numbered Metal Gear Solid 5.

We already knew that legendary Japanese crazy man Hideo Kojima was spending most of his time and attention on developing Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker. We already knew that the man considers it an "MGS5-class game." [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/93239-MGS-Peace-Walker-Has-Various-Cardboard-Boxes-Custom-Snakes] What we didn't already know is that in early development, the PSP action title was Metal Gear Solid 5.

A Japanese Konami blog [http://ameblo.jp/kp-blogcast/entry-10466416389.html#main] entry shows off some early prototype logos for the handheld adventures of Big Boss, and it's there plain as day: The original title of the game was Metal Gear Solid 5: Peace Walker. Every game in the "main" series since MGS2 has had a subtitle (Sons of Liberty, Snake Eater, and Guns of the Patriots) so the "Peace Walker" bit now makes slightly more sense.

Now, the question becomes: Why was the title changed? If Peace Walker is an "MGS5-class game," why isn't it Metal Gear Solid 5 anymore?

It's hard for me to care about the title either way...I've never really gotten into the series. And I don't feel that I'm missing too much.

Probably has some intricate and complex backstory that Kojima himself gets confused about. If thats the case then lesser men like us would have our heads explode trying to figure it out.

Probably doesn't contribute enough to the story. Just fills in an area where the game explained it, but now we're going into detail. Kind of like Portable Ops.

Maybe because the game follows Big Boss, not Solid Snake? Of course, that was also the case with MGS3...god, the chronology for this series is as convoluted as Star Wars! =P

Thats what I saw it as.

Also, no offense to the PSP, but, you cannot really do a proper, long-immersive game on a handheld. Its really for smaller periods of time

Hmmm... I might have to steal my cousin's PSP so I can play through this, it's not like he uses it for anything.

Probably because he said before that the MGS series was supposed to end with MGS4. :p This sounded more like a spin-off or side story or something. Like a Majora's Mask type thing, I guess.

maybe they decided they wanted to save the numbered for larger home consul releases?
I don't think Metal Gear Rising is officially MGS5 either... it's possible they're simply not using numbers post MGS4 because all the stories left to tell are side-stories now.

The Peace Walker demo is awesome, can't wait to get my hands on the full game.

Possibly because, like MGS3, there are no actual Metal Gears in the game, and this time around Kojima thought it would be silly to include them in the name?

Wait. Kojima... silly... There's a flaw in my logic here.

Because numbers are reserved for home console games for some reason. Maybe so people who don't play the (quite excellent) handheld games don't feel left out?

It doesn't really matter in the long run. All that does matter is that we want Big Boss on the PS3 Kojima! Enough of this BS that it's "not as accessable as the PSP."

Cause the game goes from "extra/side story" to "apart of main canon".

And if you happen to be a hardcore fan of MGS series but don't own a psp, you'll be pissed...

If you happen to be a hardcore fan of MGS, you would already have a PSP to play AC!D, and Portable Ops.

He never actually said it was supposed to end. He said he was retiring Solid Snake with 4.

It looks like he got rid of the Solid in it to remind people of that.
