Oh fuck! Can you imagine Kojima and Molyneux getting together to make an open-world God game set in the Metal Gear world?! I'm actually at a loss for words at how many promises they'd make...
Might I suggest a slight correction; "I'm actually at a loss for words at how many promises they'd break."

But seriously, I do think he just says it'll be his last game so his fans will say 'No, don't quit!' to justify his staying and churning out the same games.
I think a slight correction to your slight correction is in order: "I'm actually at a loss for words at how many promises Molyneux will break."

Thing about Kojima: he doesn't usually break promises (I'm sure there's been a few but, not to the level of Molyneux), he just finds ways to troll the fanbase.

The thing is that after this, there really isn't anywhere the Metal Gear Series can go besides remaking Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2. Kojima has been wanting to finish with Metal Gear Solid for a long time, and I think he is using Silent Hills as his oppotunity to show Konami that he can move beyond MGS.

If Silent Hills does well, he may be able to leave Metal Gear behind and move on with Konami's blessing rather than simply being forced back to the money maker. He has been bored making MGS since MGS2, but deliberately finishing Big Boss's story to become a full loop really does help to close it off.

There might be a new Metal Gear something, but this will be the last MGS game led by Kojima (and dare I say it, the last true MGS game). He is over 50 now, he is tired of it, and he wants to do some of his own pet projects before he retires. We can look at P.T.; this is a man who can do other things and do them well, and he is thirsty to move on.

Kojima has never really cared much about his fanbase; when people start saying how much they love his work, he seems to react with a shrug. He does it because he loves western films and MGS is James Bond meets Rambo childhood fantasy, look at him now.

Kojima also doesn't break his promises; he teases and trolls his fanbase, but unlike Peter, he always delivers a solid, strong game with good gameplay and an insane but complete story. Play Fable 2 and Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater, tell me if you think they're in the same league. Kojima has far too much pride to release something that isn't good enough, and too much pride to flat out lie to his fans.

Cue next MGS game being directed by Kojima because his inbox got spammed with even more death threats from a collective untroubled by the complexities of life.
It's worth remembering that Kojima got death threats back in the time when developers of video games didn't get death threats and this was considered a massive thing. Also worth pointing out that this threat was apparently pretty serious, not a basic Twitter "I'll rape you, ****" but something like "I know where you live, see?"

The series could end with "Snake" as the protagonist and go with "Lizard" or "Toad" or even "Burrito" for the protagonist, those guys have been in the background doing just as important work as those legless lizard guys but nobody has bothered to tell their story. A protagonist can be dropped once a story has completed and a new one can be used in his or her place.

...Snake will live on as long as Konami can milk him for?
Milking the ol' snake, eh? ;D

Hmm. Sounds like either waffling (no more Metal Gear, but more Metal Gear) or over-promising (200 times Ground Zero? It was pretty small, but c'mon.).
If he means the map size like I've understood, that would be only about 14 times 14 the map of Ground Zeroes, which I think isn't that unheard of in open world games.

Hey, people who played the last MGS games, you have to buy this game to complete story and for things to make sense. I know I said that last time and made you buy the last game based on the idea of some closure but this time I'm totes seriously!

LOL! Oh yeah, Konami is going to totally be okay with that one and respect Kojimas wishes. After all, they have soooooo many other cash cow franchises making them money these day-...oh wait, no they don't because they have taken nearly everything out to the back and shot it. Silent Hill is hobbling along after being knee capped by them.

Metal Gear Solid VI: Phantom Sons of the naked Ocelots Confirmed!
Featuring all new protagonist Cobalt Snake (voiced by David Hayter) who is totally not a clone of a clone, at least not until the surprise twist ending where he totally is, as he takes on the terrorist cell Phantom, headed by the not clone of Ocelot, except until the first twist in the middle of the game at least until the middle of the game where it turns out it was a brainwashed by nano machines Otacon working for the president [of Fox news], as they use the newest metal gear: Metal Gear Ocelot, controlled by the brain of Naked Snake himself.

coming soon.

===================

On topic, I believe he wants it to be his last nobody wants to keep working on the same project forever, but I doubt Konami let him stop they will probably clone him just so they can keep churning more Metal Gears, and they'll always be his last.

Last MGS? Naaaah. Konami have Kojima tied up in their basement, strapped to a milking machine. His nipples are damn sore from all the milking, but sadly for him, they'll still keep milking.

Yeah, I don't believe it either. Even if Kojima gives up the series, you know Konami is going to make more games (for better or worse).

Didn't Peter pretty much clam up? I haven't heard anything from him in a while. I like to imagine someday, he'll be sitting in a wheelchair in an old folks home and he'll be sleeping - and every now and then he'll suddenly just look up and shout "I've got it! The most awesome game idea ever!" then he'll fall back asleep.

I mean I guess. He's played the Shia Labeouf I'm not famous anymore card before. Iwouldn't say he feels more contrite or apologetic this time though.
But I do think he realized he farted a lot louder than normal in a very crowded room. And everyone is looking at him.
He'll be back, don't you worry.
