Lucky xbone and PS4 owners can now download and try out the latest genius creation from Hideo Kojima [insert faceless Konami exec] for free; the highly anticipated Metal Gear Survive (open beta)! Arguably luckier PC owners not allowed however, says Konami. As the title subtly implies, it is supposed to be until the 21st. Get it whilst it's hot!

The legacy of Kojima is strong here, for the final game will allegedly require a persistent online connection and come bundled with access to exciting options often referred to as 'microtransactions,' but...if you take part in the beta, your saved date will carry over to the f...ohh wait, umm...sorry, will not carry over to the full game!

You do get to keep a nameplate, Rex head and a banana though. (???) for freeeee!

Trailer drop;

Anybody interested in trying out this hot new piece of art [small]while you don't have to sacrifice those useful pennies[/small]?
am personally here, but that is purely down to there are some things I just got to know with my own eye-paws, it needs to be experienced, the curiosity is too much

I'm not touching this abomination with a 10-foot pole purely out of principle. As I understand it, the game will also be filled up to the brim with microtransactions.

Let's see.

Co-op Zombie survival game with some Metal Gear stuff inserted. Even without the #FucKomani and micro transaction elephants in the room, this would be a pass.

This is the one with the crystal zombos called "creatures" (yes, really) where you play generic grunt #259 instead of any of the wacky Metal Gear characters people actually like, right?

Pass.

On second thought, maybe you can play as actual Metal Gear characters if you shell out for the dlc. Or buy a fuckton of lootboxes and get lucky.

Just imagine how much stuff you could unlock. Every boss character, every single version of Snake/Big Boss, the entire supporting cast (even Otacon), and each with alternate costume skins. Bonus points if they're all also plain better than the player characters you get out-of-the-box.

Amusingly, I just realized that Konami could have done something interesting with this.

You and your men are living in a fortress out in the middle of nowhere, then suddenly, your guards start going missing/turning up dead. You send out tanks and helicopters and they end up destroyed. Your trusted lieutenants get killed, one after another. You set traps and he evades them. He blows up your walking nuclear armed tank without a sweat. Nothing stops him. Then you end up face to face with an E-rank nobody named Solid Snake....just before he kills you and your Outer Heaven gets bombed to hell.

A remake of Metal Gear from the perspective of Big Boss. Possibly with Dungeon Keeper-like mechanics.

Oh, there is little doubt this is tooled up entirely for the lootbox crafty material grind market. Conveniently everything degrades including the very clothes you wear too. Everything is a dwindling limited resource and everything requires materials found from...yup, treasuureee boxes! Rewards are also treasure boxes or materials. With pretty much most assets recycled straight from MGSV. This could be the most openly cynical 'AAA' title to grace this year. But the store 'options' are not revealed yet, not before pre-orders can be maximised of course. So cannot say for sure. Maybe they noticed EA shitting the bed last year and realised they put themselves on a risky course, mabe not.
Whatever it is, i can't look away. Konami are too inept to leave this corpse reanimation to the imagination

Got it downloaded and am currently trying it just for funzies.

Edit: Ok, that's the third Beta I have deleted.

I like the general idea of playing tower defense in a hostile environment, but the beta left me a bit overwhelmed; resources, gear, stats and menus up the wazoo.

... that's a really fun idea.

Maybe start out small first, because I'm guessing going up against Snake right off the bat and having your defeat be a foregone conclusion wouldn't be fun to a lot of people. I'm thinking more along the lines of stopping an actual E-rank scrub as the tutorial, then escalating things from there with progressively higher ranked dudes. Then a team, a squad, and so on, until the 'final' mission has you trying to stop multiple full squads of S-ranked troops with support, basically a small army. You beat them. Good job, Outer Heaven is secure. Roll credits.

But if you complete certain secondary (maybe even hidden) objectives along the way, you get an extra mission after the credits. It'll of course be vs Solid Snake, and really, really ballbustingly hard. If you manage to beat him though, you get something special. No, not an unlock or a bonus cutscene or anything.

The 'Time Paradox' game over screen, like if you kill Ocelot in MGS3. And nothing else.

Hah, yeah that is one of the ugliest, annoying, least appealing menu/UIs to ever grace an apparent action game. And they expect you to use it during a time limit while being attacked by bullet sponge hordes, oh and there's no pause button of course. To be honest, I've seen all I need from a couple of attempts already, seen its' ambitions; the curiosity has been appeased at minimal cost. It may trick people who like the gameplay of MGSV that they're having the same fun they had during that period, but it's cheap lies aiming for an intimate connection with your bank account. Maybe the release day reception will be different however, a further curiosity to abide

Why does Konami even bother anymore? I thought they resorted to doing only casino games now.

In any case, hopefully it will be their biggest failure by far, and this is also one case where I would not blame reviewers for laying on the negative subjectivity nice and thick. Wouldn?t hurt to add a footnote encouraging all remaining employees to run, run, run from that shithole shiny company as soon as humanly possible, because their sanity most likely depends on it.

I'm not touching it, but I did see a clip with someone summoning RAY. That's pretty cool at least.

I think I'm more excited for the possibility of Metal Gears in the FOX engine than anything else tbh.

Yeah, but we all know how Konami loves an easy cash grab. This looks like it's just jumbled together from left-over assets of MGS5 and the Fox engine. Next stop: MG Survive becomes an annual release. :p

Yeah I tried the beta yesterday with a friend. We didn't go in with high hopes, and admittedly we don't exactly want it to succeed.

... which is why we were annoyed that we were enjoying it. At least initially. It's a fun concept really, bro-op scavenging and fighting off monsters with limited resources.

But it quickly started to grate. See, despite copy-pasting assets and everything, the real problem is that Metal Gear was not designed for fast paced combat.

It certainly wasn't made for melee combat.

Basic enemy attacks outrange your spear, nor do they flinch upon being hit. The attacks are stiff to use and good luck evading attacks. Guns feel better, but still aren't fantastic. Good luck having enough bullets to warrant using firearms wholesale though. Basically just have enough for capping Bombers.

Then there's the crafting everything, while you can just TELL is gonna pave the way for microtransactions. Especially since you get literal lootboxes at the end of a round.

But there really wasn't enough to keep us engaged, though that's largely due to how limited the beta is. Not much in the way of weapons, gear etc. Trap variety and such is nice,, but it got super repetitive fast.

I ain't picking this up out of principal, but it's got more problems than just the Metal Gear name.

Who's even going to buy this? Metal Gear fans are pretty hardcore in the sense that to be a fan of the series you gotta have played them all really to keep up with what the fuck is going on. Thus, I'm sure the vast majority of fans know the whole thing that happened with MGS5, Kojima, and Konami to almost certainly be pissed at Konami and have absolutely no interest in Konami whoring out Metal Gear regardless of how good/bad the game is. Most everyone else that likes the whole survival style game is probably playing something else or probably not interested in a Metal Gear version. Although, the game does look pretty good from the video for the survival style game that Survive is going for, but like most Metal Gear fans I wouldn't even play it for free (and I'm not even downloading the beta).

I'm sure somewhere, there's someone saying "Man, I love Zombie Survival games, but what I really want is a Metal Gear themed one and I don't want to look for a DayZ mod that does that. Can someone make a game for me?"

Because there's always one guy. Now, for the other 6,999,999,999 of us.......

I'm downloading it, because why not. I imagine 4 days is enough to get everyone to hate it and then when it sells 3 copies, Konami will declare that people do not want video games and go back to making their casino games and PES.

i have seen a few comments elsewhere from people saying they probably will still buy it regardless because they 'miss the gameplay from MGSV.'

Yeah, there's that too. Though it begs the question "If that's what you want, why not just play MGSV again?" I haven't gotten there yet but I've heard a lot of people say it's pretty good from a game play standpoint.

Hell, apparently it has it's own version of zombies already in game(for that matter, MGS4 also had what were pretty much zombies as well at one point, but MGS4 has a lot of story beats weighing it down).

Konami Must Die.

No I'm not being ironic. Konami Must Die.

This game MUST fail in order to teach the traitors at Konami HQ that this shit needs to STOP.
