Ok, here's the issue. i bought a cheap guitar and amp from a starter pack(Fender squire). I listen to some metal and hard rock and i want to replicate that sound. A great example would be the Wake of the Fallen by Avenged Sevenfold. Now i tried turning my gain up all the way..close but no cigar. I've heard about distortion pedals and im interested in one.
To get that metal sound is a distortion pedal all i need? or is the problem with my guitar and amp?

Boss actually makes a pedal called something along the lines of 'Metal Madness', though I'm not sure if that's the correct name. Emulates what you hear in your examples quite accurately.

I have a Roland Microcube amplifier in my room right now that has a Rectifier setting which also produces a similar effect.

In general though I think that if you're going for metal-esque sound effects and are willing to spend an extra buck to get it it's a digital pedal set. Gives you more customisability as well as a hell of a lot of amazing and weird effects. (think over 300 different pre-programmed effects)

Get the pedal, but put your amp settings to about 1 o clock for the bass, 2 o clock for treble, and 9 o clock for the mids. Also find out if your tuned correctly, I didn't practice guitar for the first few months I had one all because the tuning was wrong, and I thought I just sucked.
