I like a little bit of metal. I like the stuff that's more... 'artistic' stuff like agalloch, Sculptured, Cynic, Wolves in the Throne Room.

Also a lot of Post-Metal is good (A.K.A. Instrumental Metal) stuff like shelter red or red sparrows

Am I right in saying metal got its name because itis harder than rock?

and personally i like most kinds of metal as long as they get the emotion (normally anger) across in a good way, and are not just trying any way they can think of to sell me a disc or two (nu-metal comercialism). I don't realy like Black metal, it's just never realy put together too well, and i dont understand satanism either (someone else said they wern't a christian while talking about black metal earlier so i am going to say that i am).

Metal I enjoy:

NWOBHM
Thrash
Death
Black
Progressive
Grunge
Doom
Metal I think is rotting our children's brains with it's stupidity:

Metalcore
Deathcore
Nu-Metal (exceptions though)
Alt Metal
Newer American
Symphonic Black
Grindcore
Power
Hair
Classic*

Suck it Scene kids.

*Look I know what your gonna say "You dislike Led Zepplin? You sir are an idiot :)" The only reason why I do not like Classic Rock 'n Roll/Metal is that it's overplayed for the most part and basterdized by modern fashion.

I'd agree, but I can enjoy some metal

I'm not a huge fan, but I have to admit, the instrumental work is pretty great. However, I do feel, generally, that metat is weaker lyrically than other forms of music.

So, I'm no fan, but I could easily understand why someone would be

Wish I could say the same for hip-hop, rap, r&b, etc.

Iron Maiden... Good old NWBHM music. That's my style. As far as more recent metal, my preferences range from relaxed Wolfmother to Trivium.

Actually, I can't call wolfmother metal really. What WOULD you define them as?
Wolfmother is rock. More specifically defined as either progressive rock or folk rock. And also Led Zeppelin clones. :)
I mainly like metalcore, progressive metal, powermetal, hardcore, post-metal(core) and some post-hardcore.

I generally enjoy any kind of metal, from power to black (maybe not so much death metal).

However thrash, heavy and power/melodic metal are my genres of choice.

Bands I like are Slayer,Iron Maiden, Metallica (pre-Black Album, mind you! Death Magnetic was ok, though), Manowar, Children of Bodom... I could go on, it depends on my daily mood really. A bad day is most likely to include a lot of Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica and Immortal, while a good day sees a lot of Nocturnal Rites, Sonata Arctica, Nightwish and Iron Maiden.

If any of you are into black metal and haven't heard it yet, you should check out Taake's first album, Nattestid Ser Porten Vid [http://www.metal-archives.com/release.php?id=1356]. One of my favorite albums in the genre, the thing is just pure beauty all the way through.

Here's a sample: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPqIRPgI9Es

I used to think most of the lyrics in metal were awful, and some of them definitely are. But there are definitely some fantastic lyricists in metal. One of my favourite bands for lyrics are The Absence. Look at these: http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/theabsence/ridersoftheplague.html#3
Compare that to say, some indie lyrics.

I'm a big fan of Iron, it's a rockin' metal.

Wait... this isn't a thread about metal! It's a thread about Metal!

Awwww....
God damn it, I was going to make that joke. I do like Steel though. Iron's a bit unrefined for me.

I like progressive/symphonic. Not really a big fan of primal roars and screams. I prefer my metal a bit more melodic.

Name ONE metal band you don't think anyone has heard of, and I have probably heard of them in some way, shape, or form.

Top ten of all time.

Iron Maiden
Iced Earth (pre-Horror Show days)
Blind Guardian
Demons and Wizards
Arcturus
Therion
Opeth
Dark Tranquility
Bruce Dickinsn solo
Bathory
Judas Priest
...
Okay, top eleven. May be out of order, but I can't pick between these bands.

Are these bands signed or are they crusading myspace metallers?

By my original statement I mean bands that are at least signed to one of the big companies. Century Media, Nouclear Blast, etc...

If they are, then pardon me.

I know they're all signed, but i'm not sure who to. As far as i know, they're not signed to any of the major labels.
I suggest anyone who likes metal check out Archons and Prey for Nothing, both have fantastic debut albums.

Death, Heavy, Thrash, Progressive, Groove, Stoner. Infact most forms of metal are awesome. not too into black metal, mainly since I never find myself in the mood for slow lingering riffs akin to Doom metal.

Current best bands are Opeth, Lamb of God, Arch Enemy, Firewind, BloodBath, Bodom, Mastodon, Tool, Black mages. And more.....
