Between the Buried and Me and Protest the Hero - (recent) progressive metal at its finest
The Black Dahlia Murder - the best that "melodic death metal" or whatever you want to call it has to offer. I love the way that Trevor (the vocalist) always looks overjoyed to be doing what he is doing.
Misery Index - for when it absolutely has to be death metal in my ears

I find that these four bands can get me through whatever metal fix I may need. I apologize for not reading the rest of the thread and just spouting things. Carry on.

I'e never got round to listening to Protest the Hero, any reccomendations of where to start? I've only recently started properly listening to The Black Dahlia Murder. I'm enjoying Nocturnal, it's just so heavy.

I'd advise you to pick up their latest album Fortress. It was near the top of my top ten list for 2008. Some of the riffs and time signatures are just beyond crazy.

For Protest the Hero, my recommendation would be their first album mate. It's called Kezia. Check out the tracks Blindfolds Aside and Heretics Aside. They have a very distinct style. Very weedly weedly, but not in an old school cheesy way. They are odd, but damn good.

I have to say, i'm not that impressed with Protest the Hero. They were just missing something, it was like they played around with time signatures and weird riffs for the sake of it, not because it was good for the song. Also, i can't stand the singers voice. It's like nails on a chalkboard for me.
For this sort of music, i much prefer Between the Buried and Me. White Walls is possibly one of the best songs ever written.

I generaly only like slow metal. Electric Wizard, Nortt, Evoken, that sort of stuff. Oh and Converge but metalheads seem to dislike metalcore.

Eh for me most the time most metal bands take themselves too seriously, but the times I am in the mood for it I usually end up listening to Metallica, Lamb of God, Sabath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and Soulfly.

I've been listening to a lot of slipknot lately, they're awesome in my opinion. I've also found myself enjoying some Gore-Grind bands like WTC etc. other than that I like speed metal and deathmetal

Indeed I do. It's nice when you need some "light" Death Metal, in the sense that it is easy to lsiten to, and not very complicated.

I think it can. Well, each to his own, but I don't really find metallica that great. Which is why the seemingly unending praise for them seems odd and tired to me.

I myself enjoy listening to Death Metal and Black Metal. Such as: Gorgoroth, Behemoth, Immortal, Cannibal Corpse, Dark Throne etc.

I'm very picky when it comes to metal. It's a good genre, but its not my favorite, its really hit or miss.

I Enjoy somewhat mellow stuff with non-standard lyrical themes (or no lyrics at all). Agalloch, Amesoeurs, Coldworld, Cynic, Daylight Dies, Drudkh, Electric Wizard, Enslaved, Falls of Rauros, Isis, Katatonia, October Tide, Opeth, Pelican, Red Sparrows, Shelter Red, Russian Circles, Sculptured, Wolves in The Throne Room

Well, you may have point in that Load, Reload and St Anger were poor albums, and Death Magnetic is good but didn't really blow me away, but the Black Album, And Justice For all, Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning and the imesurable genius that is Master of Puppets really are amazing.

That's pretty subjective. I've never liked any part of their music. Their riffs bore me, i don't like the vocals and i find the drums unimaginative. I recognise their skill, and i appreciate what they've done for the metal industry, but i just can't like them.

I'm sure their shows are amazing, but that wont make me like their music. Their live show might deserve the hype it gets, but i don't understand why their music does.
