I was looking at the steam page for Metro: Last Light, a game I am eagerly awaiting yet worried about. I loved the first Metro, but after hearing all of the trouble with THQ and that nonsense, I don't have complete faith in Last Light. While checking out the page, I saw that one of the preorder bonuses was "Ranger Mode". The steam page quote for ranger mode is:

Ranger Mode - Experience complete immersion. No HUD. Less bullets. Brutal Combat. Hardcore.

This sounds like a great idea, except that it seems like that you have to preorder to get this mode that would add a lot to Metro. If there is one thing Metro players love, it is immersion. It is all the first game had going for it. Now, I don't preorder games because I like to think of myself as an educated consumer, but this is something at hardcore Metro players would love to get their hands on. So, is 4A Games asking hardcore fans to preorder and put their faith into their game to get a mode that should be included in the base game?

I think we can all agree that the only thing that matters is that they put this in the 360 mode....right?

Alright, maybe I'm the only one. I absolutely LOVED Metro 2033 and am excited for Last Light. This mode sounds bad-fucking-ass and I really really really really really hope that this is in my system of choice. Sadly, all my extensive research and favor calling in (I Googled it for a few minutes) has not been able to tell me if this mode will be on the consoles.

As to the actual question, I'm not sure what to think about this. This is a great way to get pre-orders...if you're the developer/publisher. However, for those of us who have been burned by a gorgeous trailer that turned out to be a digital turd in a box, it's hard to justify pre-ordering anything.

Ranger Mode in Metro 2033 was pretty good, apart from a couple of guns that lacked iron sights so you couldn't aim them at all. I pre ordered Last Light, simply because I really liked the first game and I am prepared to take the risk with this one. The theme seems to be exploring the human factions and conflicts more this time around, it was just something touched upon last time when you had to get past two of the groups fighting.

It is kinda lame adding it as a pre order bonus only but only a small minority of fans want it anyway, Metro 2033 wasn't exactly a conventional shooter either and the ranger mode takes it even further away. So wouldn't most of the hardcore fans that want it have a pre order in anyway? Hard to say but its still lame, it will be even lamer if it appears as a DLC within a few weeks or on day one.
