I actually rented Echoes and got fairly far, I was battling Dark Samus in some laboratory before it had to go back. I really liked what I played, it felt tense and exciting, I was always worried that Dark Samus would show up randomly and demand a battle, sort of what Resident Evil 3 wanted to be with Nemesis, except you know, Echoes made it work.

Play them all; yes ALL of them. If you can't skip the cut-scenes in other M than use that time to get a drink or, take a piss. This comes from someone who has never played Other M. If you can get your hands on the GBA ones that would be a great place to go as well.

Actually a good comparison would be the difference between the original Metroid and Metroid 2. There are strange little tweaks to the formula in Prime 2, like the need to conserve ammunition, the dark world, etc. People either seem to love those tweaks or hate them. If you'd enjoyed Echoes up to that point I think it's safe to say you'll enjoy the rest of it. The way I saw it was that those little tweaks really upped the ante. It can be rather tense at times.

I found Other M to be fine except the story.
Same here, but even the story isn't too bad, just different. I'm not sure if that's good, or bad thing, but I like how they actually gave her a persona, even if she is a bit melodramatic (a tiny under statement there but whatever).
I just didn't like how Samus, who was basically a shining example of strong female characters in video games up to that point(she's equal to if not more important than her male peers) suddenly gets a persona except the persona is "I need men to help me out because I'm just a girl" Which is about as far away from the original character as you could get since most gamers thought samus was a guy until the end of the original game.

It'd be like giving link a voice and then making him cry all the time because he feels weak and scared.

Other M had really terrible controls if I remember correctly, specifically switching between third and first person. During the action this switch was way too awkward to make it a viable battle tactic, furthermore later in the game you were forced to switch from third to first to fight certain enemies.

OT: Get the metroid prime games for the Wii, excellent installments and a shining example of how to make a metroid game in first person.

Every Metroid game except Fusion and Other M are stellar. Those two wreck the sequence-breaking that made the series popular, forcing a linear exploration onto the player and giving Samus a superior officer from whom to take orders.

In the other games, Samus's mission parameters are "Stop the Space Pirates from weaponizing the metroids by any means necessary." Such means usually end with a spectacular explosion. In Fusion, Samus is suddenly saddled with a disembodied voice telling her where to go and what to do, because it reminds her of the only person she ever really respected. Other M gives us that person and has Samus decide that she'll follow his orders again, even in face of certain death.

Why did I write that? I didn't intend to come here to criticize the inconsistent characterization that those two games included.

Every single one (Yes, even Hunters and pinball.).

Fusion I'm a little iffy on though. It's great on its own and the game play is nearly identical to Super Metroid, but it's much more linear and story driven. Also much harder the first time through. You will die. A lot.

Also be prepared for an ass-whooping on the NES Metroid.

Stay far, FAR away from Other M.

Which Prime game do you guys think is the best?
All the Primes are good in different ways.

The first one is extremely creative, immersive, and fun, my favorite. Plus meta-ridley.

The second one, while less richly original totally overhauls the dark isolated atmosphere of the original while also boosting the difficulty. No Ridley but Dark Samus is a worthy stand in.

The third takes the entire concept of the first two, and Metroid as a whole, to the next
level. The combat system is perfected, the storyline is richer, the environments are more varied, and you get Ridley AND Dark Samus AND what amounts to Samus' super saiyan mode.

Don't bother with Hunters except maybe for the multiplayer. It completely misses the point of the metroid series replacing exploration and immersion with repetitive combat.

Like people are saying:play Super Metroid,it's fucking amazing, If you have a GBA or DS then defiantly pickup Fusion and Zero Mission,Fusion can be linear but I still thought it was pretty fun and the story was ok.

Also finish Prime 1 it's pretty awesome, same with 2 and 3.All 3 either luckily or sadly(depending on your tastes) Retro thought that fetch quest thing was a bitchin' idea and implement it in every prime game.

I won't speak for Other M or Hunters as I haven't played them enough to make an opinion.

Play everything except Other M. EVERYTHING. Yes, even hunters, which has had some mixed opinions, but I certainly think is good, especially for a DS game. (wait, maybe not Metroid 2. Yeah, you might put that off. Nobody likes Metroid 2) Also, check out www.Metroid2002.com for some awesome stuff to try and do, sequence breaks, speed runs and other stuff. If you're interested.

I like Metroid 2 just fine, in many ways I think it's superior to the original.
