So I was thinking about this recently,
If you could make your own custom special forces unit made up of the characters from the previous ones (COBRA, FOXHOUND ect)who would you pick?

You can go for any template you want but i'm going for a 5 member plus leader kind of thing,
Also if you wanna include non unit bosses (Gray Fox or whatever) then go for it.
My choices:

Leader:
The Boss.
Iconic as the one that started it all, founder of CQC, charismatic and loyal to the mission,up there as one of my fave MGS characters.

1st member/1st Boss/Snake fodder:
Laughing Octopus.
Considerably more dangerous than Decoy Octopus, ability to camouflage and is actually a hot Scandinavian chick under the suit, although horrifically scarred by war crimes.

2nd Member:
Vulcan Raven.
Huge tank, who also drives a tank, with shamanic powers. Also walks about Alaska with his shirt off, hero!

3rd Member/Obligatory Psychic or Mysterious Boss:
The Sorrow.
Admittedly already deceased medium, with strong connection to the boss. Also for some reason i never seem to remember the Psycho Mantis fight as fondly/vividly as other people, and this unique boss was one of the high points (of which there were many)of MGS3

4th Member/Obligatory Sniper Boss:
Sniper Wolf.
Kurdish elite sniper, capable of going without food and staying still for prolonged periods of time ect (seems to be a minimum requirement in this series). Preferred over The End because, well, he hasn't got long left in him has he. Great Boss and Boss fight. Also wolves over parrots any day.

5th Member:
Fortune.
Seemingly invincible badass with a railgun, why wouldn't you want that on your team.
Also African-American so plus points for equality.

Disclaimer.
Haven't played MGR Revengeance so i may have missed some great bosses and possible members.

Leader: Solid Snake. Because. Though admittedly he's not used to giving other people orders, but I'd still take him over most other candidates.
2nd: Vulcan Raven, the heavy hitter.
3rd: Psycho Mantis, potentially the most powerful in the franchise.
4th: The Fear, the mobile scout.
5th: The End.
6th: Cyborg 'Jack the Ripper' Raiden.

All of them more professional than most in the franchise (except for Psycho Mantis), all embraced the neutral soldier's mindset and not treacherous (again except for Mantis, but he would follow anyone who allowed him to kill people). All of them except for Mantis have their leader's grudging respect. Together, these six could take down anything.

All of the other cyborgs in MGS4 and Revengeance have such major psychological issues that I wouldn't trust them to cooperate in a unit or even follow any orders beyond 'kill what's in front of you'. Raiden too, but he's at least willing to try to be a team player and hold his bloodlust in check out of respect for Snake.

Trying to make one spread across all the games that could work as a cohesive unit...

Leader: Revolver Ocelot. Smart, manipulative and an incredible shot. Capable of using CQC and constantly manages to get what he wants, even when it seems like he loses.

First Boss Boss: Monsoon. Sadistic, great gimmick with the magnetic body and probably easiest to control of the Desperado cyborgs. As long as it ends up "preying on the weak", he'd follow.

Second Boss: Vamp. Immortal, really fast and surprisingly easy to get to follow orders.

Third Boss: Screaming Mantis. A lot easier to keep in line than her original inspiration, and not a slouch in power.

Fourth Boss: The End. Skilled sniper, even if he won't last that long...

Fifth Boss: Jetstream Sam. Because we need an X Factor to mess things up, like Gray Fox.

My Try Hard list
1. Big Boss - He was a boss in MG2 so that counts right? He's the boss, one of the most gifted soldiers ever and most importantly is a leader and someone that people will follow. One person in particular.

2. Boss - Is also the boss. Can serve as a mentor roll to Big Boss and would be excellent at training and guiding the over members of the unit. Can also defeat pretty much whoever she feels like at CQC. Her unlimited ammo gun is a bonus.

3. Revolver Ocelot - This is why Big Boss has to be included. He is one the greatest political intriguer ever made and an information and shooting stuff specialist, but unless you have Big Boss on your side all that goes to waste because he'll be working against you have the time.

4. Sniper Wolf - I would buy her a jacket with a functioning zip with Ocelot's Patriot money.

5. Vamp - I considered putting the Sorrow here, but whilst the Sorrow would provide some pretty unique capabilities and is a stabilising element, Boss and Big Boss provide enough leadership and I believe the Sorrow would be too pacifistic and likely to do his own thing to be a worthwhile asset. Vamp is an absolute powerhouse and not only that but has proved himself to be an effective operator taking the decisions necessary in a situation on his own initiative. He is something of a loose cannon but not so much that Boss and Big Boss couldn't reign him in.
So generally favouring brains and cohesiveness over brawn. But I think that group of people could pretty much conquer the world.

Now for the list called: I Want To Watch The World Burn a.k.a. Does Not Play Well With Others
1. Revolver Ocelot - A man who can't wake up in the morning without doublecrossing himself twice
2. Psycho Mantis - Could not be happier if he was killing everything in range and making the rest his puppets
3. The Fury - Went into space, lost his mind and now all he just wants to spread the flames
4. Crying Wolf - Accidentally killed her baby brother and then slaughtered children in grief saying the wolf did it. Now in a giant mechanised wolf robot suit complete with railgun
5. Vamp - The Fear, the Pain or Fatman nearly made it here but whilst they are suitably crazy, they don't have the power level vamp does. And I can only imagine the things that Vamp might get up to if these 4 fine people were his companions

Finally my list if I can choose one person per game (with a bonus person) and I need 1 Psychic, 1 Sniper, 1 Explosives Expert, 1 Hide and Seeker and 1 Leader. I'm also choosing based on how fun they are to fight as well as their abilties/personality
1. Leader: The Joy aka Boss (MGS3) - There is literally no other answer to this that could be correct. The Boss has one of the greatest boss fights in the franchise and one of the greatest storylines and is one of the most powerful people in the MGS universe.

2. Psychic: Psycho Mantis (MGS1) - The Sorrow has an interesting character and an interesting role, but his boss fight is only ever fun once. Screaming Mantis is a lesser version in every way to Psycho Mantis.

3. Explosives Expert: The Fatman (MGS2) - I could never really get behind Raven, and Raging Raven wasn't much either (generally MGS4 had a weak boss unit, although one of the very best boss fights with Liquid Ocelot). The Fatman was one of the big drivers of MGS2 and I adore some of the tricks both in the missions caused by him and his boss fight. His final bomb makes him a lock. Laugh and grow fat!

4. Hide And Seeker: Laughing Octopus (MGS4) - This was the most fun boss unit fight in MGS4 and on par with the rest of the series. It might not play too well on repeats, but the tricks she pulls are absolutely brilliant and so much fun to fall for or catch. The Fear and Decoy can't touch this.

5. Sniper: Sniper Wolf (MGS1) - This was the hardest one to decide. I wasn't a big fan of Fortune (She's basically the Sniper equivalent in 2. Her railgun can go the distance) and Crying Wolf doesn't get a look in, because she was only ever an imitation of Sniper Wolf. But The End rightly deserves his place as one of the greatest ever videogame boss fights, and the dude can photosynthesise. In the end Sniper Wolf wins because she also has personality backing up her skills whereas the End died of old age whilst I was writing this and then Major Zero had a go at me.

EDIT: I just realised I'm only doing 5 compared to everyone else's six. I'm happy with my lists so I'll leave them like they are. Dead Cell had 3 people and a leader, Beauty and the Beast had 4 and a leader, Foxhound had 5 and a leader and Cobra Unit had 4.5 and a leader (The Sorrow wasn't really working with the rest of them). So 4 and leader is sort of an average I guess :p

I'm going to present mine in the order you'd fight them in the game:

1. (Hide-and-seek mechanic boss battle) Fatman - I respect any larger gentleman, in a bomb suit (they're heavy), who can roller skate with that kind of grace. Also, bombs. I love bombs.

2. (Ridiculously fun boss) Psycho Mantis - This is one of my all time favourite boss battles, breaking the 4th wall, a silly method of winning the battle, it had it all.

3. (Sniper) - The End - This one was tough, because I adore Sniper Wolf, but I find a 100-odd year old Crimean War veteran (possibly? In my mind he fought in the Crimean war, because fuck it) to be more credible than a blonde haired Swedish 'Kurd'.

4. (Hand to Hand) - Cyborg Ninja Grey Fox - Because you gotta get up close and personal at some point.

5. (Fucking took me quite a few attempts to actually fucking win this one) Vamp - The first time I ever played MGS 2 I genuinely struggled with him, he pissed me off to the point that I ended up rage-quitting, and taking a good few weeks away from MGS 2 before I got back into it. I know, I know, I'm fucking shit at games.

6. (Leader and final boss) Liquid Snake - Because British accents make for good leadership of baddies.

Ill go for another

1. Leader: major tom. British and named after a david bowie song

2. Logistics/supply: drebin. He kinda had that jack sparrow thing going "you can always trust the dishonest man to be dishonest" hes also named after frank drebin from naked gun. Not to mention he can get a hold of anything

3. The tank: the fury (was a tough choice between him and raven but raven was easy beat with a few well placed claymores). This guy soaks up damage and has a flamethrower

4. The ninja: grey fox. I dont think I need to elaborate

5. The soldier: big boss. Probably the best soldier ever. So good that he had to be cloned

1. The leader: Solid Snake. Charismatic, sarcastic, good public image. Pretty damn cool.

2. The second-in-command: Otacon. Has a history of helping Snake on his missions, so why the hell not.

3. The mysterious one: Raiden. I know, polarizing. But hey, he becomes a cyborg ninja.

4. The bomb expert: Stillman. Knows everything about bombs, fights for the safety of people.

5. The sniper: The End. Has lots of experience, has a parrot as a pet. That one is a major selling point.

6. The femme fatale: Meryl Silverbourgh. 'Nuff said.
