Being a pathetically dedicated Metal Gear fan, I splurged a bit on the ps2 Metal Gear Solid Collection, which includes MGS1, and the special editions of MGS2 and 3. Those of you who have played, can you tell me some of the new features of MGS2 Substance and MGS3 Subsistence? (And before someone LOLZ, I did not shell out much extra for these so I was not ripped off/ wasting money, thank you.)

I'm pretty sure Substance has VR missions, and I know Subsistence includes remakes of the first two Metal Gear games -- which is awesome, when you consider they're the MSX versions, and Metal Gear 2 didn't get a release outside of Japan before Subsistence. Beyond that, I don't really know what the differences are -- but I'm sure there are some hardcore Metal Gear fans on these forums, someone's bound to know the whole list.

I'm pretty sure that the original Metal Gears were on Disc 2 of Subsistence, which does not come with Essentials.

EDIT: As for the differences MGS3 has a new controllable camera.

Well that sucks -- what's the point of getting subsistence if it doesn't have the first two games? The only reason I've never played 3 is that I've been waiting for a copy of Subsistence to come along at a point where it fits as an impulse buy. I'm a fan of the series, but it's not high enough on my priority list to actively seek out a copy. ZoE 2, on the other hand...

First came Metal Gear Solid VR Missions. It was a 2 disc game that came with a LONG training mode that was practically a game on its own.
Then came MGS2: Substance, which had an enhanced training mode, as well as the European Extreme difficulty. Unfortunately, some of the cool easter eggs like making Snake shave were removed from the game for some unexplained reason.
MGS3 Subsistence had a second disc with "bloopers" and alternate footage, and the two MSX Metal Gear games, as well as the original version of Metal Gear Online.
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops + had an expansion pack for multiplayer.
The special edition of MGS4 didn't have much of value that I remember.

After them, there aren't any spec. editions that I know of.

Oh, I envy you.
Subsistence is the way 3 was meant to be played: With a working fucking camera.

For that alone it's worth it.

Ya, I ended up getting that too...and honestly its a lot better just getting the games all separately.

I still haven't played MGS because they give you just the PS1 version and you need to find a PS1 memory card to actually save it....the MGS 2 one is fine because it has everything on it, and I had to go out and find MGS3:Subsistence, which I did happen to find, and love, and just finished a playthrough off a few days ago.

MGS2:Substance has VR missions and MGSkateboarding.
MGS3:Subsistence has all the added European bonuses(like difficulties and items), Snake Vs. Monkey, MGO(which is now shut down and on MGS4), bloopers, MG1 and MG2, and Boss Duel modes as well as other things(seriously, its awesome, go pick it up if you can)

Well I'm not 100% sure, but at least the new camera's nice.
