Wikipedia is probably your best bet. It would probably be about 3 pages for me to describe it

Super paraphrased version.
Solid and Liquid Snake are brothers who were born in a set of octuplets. They were cloned from the DNA of a man who was considered the best mercenary in the world, Big Boss. Solid Snake got all the favorable genes, whereas Liquid got all the trash. Thus, he has this inferiority complex and wants to get back at Solid. So Liquid sets all this shit up to try to kill Solid and prove that he's not worthless. They were also a prototype experiment for gene enhancement therapy for soldiers to make them faster, stronger, and all around better. I haven't actually played 3 or 4, so I don't know their stories, but that's what I know.

Otacon and Snake's gay baby was omitted.

In 3 you play as Big Boss (its set during the cold war 1960's) and in 4 you play as snake but he is suffering from premature aging due to the foxdie Naomi injected him with during MGS1.

Actually its Solid Snake that its the inferior clone and Liquid the superior one. Ocelot says that at the end of MGS1.

Its at the end after the credits when Ocelot is talking to Solidus.

He says something like: "Yes Sir. He thought he was the inferior all along."

Telling Liquid he was the inferior clone was Ocelot's plan to make Liquid snatch Metal Gear..(or something...)

I thought it was a failsafe set by the patriots or is that the having kids bit, fuck me I don't know I lost the plot by 2.

That's actually probably the best to start with, as it IS a prequel.

Nah, the aging was because of the foxdie but the patriots kidnapped the little girl (Sonny) from Olga Gurlukovich. Raiden rescued he thats why they seem so close.

Okay heres a run down in the first two games confusing shit happens, in the third game you go back in time 30 years and more confusing shit happens. Than the Fourth game does it's best to make all the confusing shit make since. (Which I think it did a pretty good job at)

replaying the old games and then replaying 4 definitely helps your understanding.

though downloading the database / reading wiki is a pretty good plan.

or you could read the comics. i heard they explain everything pretty well. haven't gotten around to borrowing them from my roommate yet.
