Ok, here is my problem.

I have Metal Gear Solid 4 and I beat it on Normal. I started a new game on my completed save so I got all of my weapons and items back from the Mk. II. Since then, I have gone through the trouble of getting face camos of Raiden(both), Roy Cambell, Otacon, 3 of the Beuties and am 3 weapons away from getting the Drebin face camo. I am playing on the hardest difficulty now(the unlockable difficulty) and am at the boss fight with screaming mantis. I recently discovered that I dont have any smoke grenades(and I dont have any special items like stealth camo or bandana) and the end would be so much easier with them. there are no more locations where I can find smoke grenades after the point where I am at.

Sooooo...my question is: Is there any possible way I can start a new game on a different difficulty without beating the rest of the game and keep all of the stuff that I've unlocked?

unfortunately, I'm gonna have to say no. Not unless you saved your progress on a different game save. Otherwise, you're gonna have to either beat the game you're playing or start from scratch.

Unfortunately, unless you've got a different save file, there's no way you could start a new game without either defeating mantis or starting a new file from scratch. I've had this problem, mainly from a Big Boss run where it said I'd killed someone and I had no previous file to fall back on.

My advice for Extreme is to go through again on an easier difficulty and stock up on non-lethal ammo, since Drebin doesn't sell it on Extreme. Also, if you're aiming for a certain target, keep multiple save files so you can fall back on a previous save if something goes wrong.

By the way, I'm assuming you mean the coloured smoke grenades to knock enemies out, right?

What exactly are you using the smoke grenades for? I've barely used them except for experimenting, and never during the screaming mantis fight.

Agree with above.. the stun grenades I can see as useful but smoke?

You don't need them, just beat the game. If you got that far on BB then you should have no trouble.

you can buy smoke grenades from Drebin for cheap at almost any time
Not on Big boss difficulty.
Are you on Big Boss or Boss Extreme. If you are on Big Boss, you can buy them, but not in Boss Extreme. If you are going for the BBE, you don't need smoke grenades in that fight anyhow, just grab the m4 and destroy her puppets as fast as possible.

Actually, the coloured 'emotion' smoke grenades are able to knock out enemies, so on Boss Extreme they can be useful as an incredibly slow stun grenade. Still useless against Mantis though.
