Ok, question to those who've played MGS4.

What's with those weird ass videos right at the start, before act 1? It shows some guy cooking in a bomb shelter, David Hayter giving an interview wearing a Solid Eye, and some other weird shit.

No idea. But I assume at least some of the videos are referencing some of the bosses in the game. (Laughing Octopus and Screaming Mantis for example.)

That and it's probably just Hideo Kojima doing his thing. It wouldn't be an MGS game without something weird in it would it?

Their meant to be setting the scene; you know like programs that are set in the game universe. Hence the adverts for the different PMCs in the game.

I think its supposed to be TV programming from the setting of the story. You're allowed to flip through the channels and you do see adverts for the PMC's that are in your way.

There was footage of an octopus on one channel and I believe a giant robot mantis chasing a car or something on another.

It's been a while since I last played MGS4 to be honest. And since I've just about to finish MGS3 again, I think I'll be getting around to playing it again real soon.

Well not the bosses to be precise but the PMCs they head up (e.g. Prying Mantis lead by Screaming Mantis etc...)

The videos are meant to show not only the reach and power The Patriots hold over the lives of citizens, but how they are so powerful they can toy with us. They show us exactly what a secret group should be hiding. They impact gamers by altering technology, showing us how they hold control of everything. It's a metaphor for our own insecurities and fears of a overwhelming power pulling puppet strings on our lives.

...now re-read that nonsense and realize Hideo is so apeshit insane that mindless blabber can seem reasonable when filtered through the filter of that lunatic.

I'm guessing that it was establishing the culture that coincides with an economy that is almost entirely dependant on warfare.

Huh. I never knew that. Again, it's been a while since I last played MGS4 so I may have forgotten some of the details.

On my mind during this:

"Why am I flipping through all these fake channels and shit? I just want to start the goddamn game!!"

and eventually, I did.

And it was glorious.

I'd say it was to show off some of the PMC's you fight (And the fact that they're so corporate consumer friendly that they even have commercials on TV networks.)

And for some good ol fashioned 4th wall breaking Hideo shenanigans.

They're advertisements for the PMCs in the game. I think it's a cool little trick to set the mood.

They are there to remind you of the NANOMACHINES.

But seriously, bar the obvious PMC ads the other ones are probably just Kojima dicking around for the lulz. 'Did you rike it' indeed.
