Microphone sound

I have my mic plugged in, it's set to 17 sound level in the Windows sound panel. This is FAR too quiet. I set it to 60, and then hit "OK" and exit the panel. I then open the Panel again, and, unsurprisingly, it is still at 60.

However, whenever I actually USE the microphone (MSN, online gaming), the sound goes automatically back down to 17 and I have to scream in it from an inch away.

Help?

Do you use Skype?

The auto-adjust feature for the volume control will slam the volume down frequently if you say something loud enough for it to clip.

Have not used Skype yet.

I turned it down to 50, and I think it's working OK right now...
