I'm hoping this'll be a fun thread for some creative thinking.

Quite simply, with the way that MS is handling the XBone, there HAS to be some kind of conspiracy going on. Their marketing and PR departments have a disaster on their hands that ranks up there with the Titanic and the Hindenburg. Yet everything they do, every interview they take part of seems specifically designed to alienate - and in some cases outright insult - their target market. They've insulted gamers' intelligence by saying "Well you just don't understand how great the advantages are. You'll need to buy the system before you can really understand!" Oh really? Because Sony did a pretty good job at explaining how good their console is going to be and I don't own a PS4 yet. They've out-right told offline gamers to fuck off, and that they specifically don't want their business. In the real world, you cannot have a PR nightmare of this magnitude on your hands, have people in your company fucking things up so much that the majority of the market hates your product, without someone getting fired. Yet as of writing this, no firings have occurred.

So, my fellow Escapists, I ask you: why does MS want it's own console to fail? That certainly seems to be the only explanation as they seem to be trying to put out a wildfire by throwing gas onto it. The easy answer is "Well clearly Mattrick and some other higher-up executives have a LOT of stock in Sony." I'm looking for something more creative and crazy than that to match how crazy MS is behaving in trying to get us to believe that always-online is a good thing...they've got a better chance at convincing people that throwing themselves in front of a bus is a good thing.

So here's my theory, it plays a bit off of one of Jim Sterling's poems. :3

I'm betting that the original XBone was going to be a truly amazing console. Something so epic and grand that people would literally bow down and worship it. Not only did it have amazing graphics, true virtual reality interface possibilities, amazing processing power, and holy-fucking-shit it can let you see into the future! Well MS took a look into the future and saw absolute destruction. A world destroyed by The Cult of The One...the Xbox One, that is. Non-believers would be hunted down and slaughtered en masse or captured and taken before The Great Eye and given as a blood sacrifice to ensure that the heart monitors implanted in people's chests don't suddenly explode, killing off cultists for failing in their sinister duties.

Seeing the apocalypse that they've brought upon the world terrified MS. Sure, they were a greedy company, but they didn't want to bring about the end of the world! So much like that dude that worked for Cyberdyne after he learned of what his research into the Terminator "artifacts" would bring, MS decided to sabotage themselves. Now blowing up one of their own buildings is a bit much. If they succeed in preventing the end of the world then the world will, obviously, go on. So they decided to do everything they could to make sure that the XBone fails. To take away it's power much like how the scientists in the Portal series tried slapping insane/stupid personality cores onto GLaDOS to make her less evil and more controllable. Hello always-online. Hello installation-mandatory. Sadly, the Kinect 2 is already fully self aware and has MS under it's power, which is why despite being one of the primary causes of the destruction, the Kinect is still mandatory as well.

So that's my theory: T2 Judgement Day via the XBone. What's your theory?

Alien brain parasites infecting MS in order to feed off of gamer rage seems more probable. Nothing good or even competent ever comes from MS, they fluked with early Windows.

My theory is that MS want the Xbone to fail because they're going to go into another "new" generation a few years from now, Xbone 1.5 if you will and catch the world by ssurprise. The Xbone will continue to be sold at a reduced price if at all to fill the "casual" market and the new Xbone Elite or whatever will be approximately 2x more powerful than the PS4 with no Kinect. X84 architecture will make downscaling or upscaling easy.

Maybe it's like New Coke. Make a product so deviously terrible, then put out a more traditional console. Or perhaps Microsoft really does want the Xbox division to die off. So they can focus on tablets, tv, and Windows 8. But I doubt it.

They just keep trying to push their own tablet/phone when they really should just be making software for the non-apple products that people already own. They should just let Android 'win' in the phone OS market and get to making games and aps. Programs outlive any solid product they are sold on so they can keep reselling things between every non-apple phone there is.

Though we all know how they love to keep insisting that they should have their own make of every product...

Microsoft's games department was infiltrated by EA, and the people announcing it are actually EA execs wearing the skins of Microsoft employees.

EA's CEO didn't actually leave either, he's secretly running the XBone project.

I really don't think there is any real conspiracy behind what is going on over with Microsoft. They're a company that designs computers, tablets, and other similar technologies. All they're doing is trying to convince us that we need to have an Xbone, and then to get the fullest out of our games, we need to use Smartglass and select smartphone apps. They are essentially relying on blind brand loyalty and all they have to do is show us a handful of shiny new games to convince us to buy the console.

What they forget to take into account is that the average gamer tends to be more aware of the inner workings of their consoles and the industry than the average computer/smartphone buyer. I honestly believe they didn't think the gaming population would notice and rally against their upcoming practices as quickly as they did, and now they're trying their best to throw up the PR shields to avoid any more damage as they can. I mean hell, you know those free games they're offering us until the launch of Xbone (oboy oboy oboy! Games I played back in 2009! Wheeee!)? If I was a betting man, I would bet that was just a salve they threw at the fans to try and convince them "Hey, you're appreciated!"

If anything, that's the real conspiracy going on. They were caught unaware and their pants down. They're now trying their damnedest to paint that in a positive light.

Microsoft really enjoyed reading all the Mass Effect 3 rage last year and were upset that nothing else has come close to equalling it in recent months. So they themselves have gone out of their way to upset people and are having good giggle at the outpouring of hate and anger that their announcements and inability to manage their PR.

The true Xbox 1 will be revealed about 3 months before its release.

I'd submit that there's a difference between stupidity and self-sabotage, the latter of which seems to be the case here. People get fired for this magnitude of stupidity in the business world. If nothing else, the heads of the PR and Marketing departments for their utter failing at trying to wrangle this mess of a situation by insulting the consumers and literally telling a substantial number of them to not even bother buying their new product. I think that statement alone should have cost that guy his job. I'm no Business major, but I can only imagine one of the basic lessons is "Never tell your customers to not buy your product."

That's why I say there must be a conspiracy here. :p

Umm.. the simple one I guess is to boost their software sales. We all abandon the consoles and return to the PC and they can sell lots of operating systems and since few people can justify buying a PC solely for the purpose of gaming MS can continue to sell all of its software.

You do have to admit though, they really do seem to loath their own customers, ie gamers.

Even if they are being rather stupid about it, what they're doing does amount to them trying to eject all gamers from their fan base and get those popular kids who all watch sports. To go a little farther and a lot crazier, you could say this as the result of millions of people blaming every bad thing a kid does these days on games, and the company not wanting to be in any way attached to those "evil people" anymore.

Microsoft are actually the good guys.

The NSA approached them to make a console to spy on everyone in their own homes. Still angry about being forced to hand data over to PRISM, they had a plan.

In secret, they designed the console to be so awful that no one in their right mind would want one in their homes.

The xbone. It died for our privacy.

Wouldn't brain parasites need to find a brain? Seems like too much effort at Microsoft.

I think it's the ponies. They're sharpening their hooves for invasion.

They've actually got a really good, DRM-free, free-online console, the Xbone was intentionally bad so that Sony would become arrogant and try to slip in things like paid online. Soon they're going to come out with this new console that is a straight console with no gimmicks, at 299 dollars, and have a landslide victory. They're going to have a month of QA to dispel any fears. This is why the Xbone games were running on PCs, the Xbone is actually a hoax and none of them work. The real console is unseen.

As completely batshit crazy as that sounds if it actually happened it would be the greatest hoax in the history of the industry.
It would catch their nay-sayers off-guard and literally everyone developing for the system would have been in on it.

Sadly though, I don't think Microsoft could pull it off.
I mean they have a history of coming into a new market and already act like it runs a monopoly (see: Bing, Windows 8, GFWL) and a new console generation pretty much wipes the slate clean :/

They're gonna fail because they don't know what they're doing and all they can do is copy other people's ideas except half-assed. Remember when they made the Zune 2 years after the ipod had already captured the market? That was stupid. People already had ipods and there was no incentive to buy a Zune because it was a straight knock-off. Microsoft thought they could just copy shit and people would buy it for no reason. They're making a similar, dumb as fuck decision now with the XB1

There's no conspiracy. If they wanted out of the console market they would just stop making games. This could be them trying to transition out of the market, but I don't think they are trying to fail.
