Of course Microsoft are going to deny it, its hardly likely that they would say "yes it does cause your console to die, but please buy it anyway.....look a cuddly tiger".

Be bad for business if they told the truth.
Except there is no truth yet. A very small handful out of 8 million got RRoD at about the same time they got a Kinect. The numbers aren't even in the triple digits yet. Come back when the reports are in the tens or hundreds of thousands and then we can talk about whether or not MS is telling the truth.

Interesting. Suppose there's two sides to the issue.

On the one hand, it's the same as when people go "CALL OF DUTY KILLED MY 360 WTFBBQHAZASDFASDF!!!111"; ie, logically speaking, if your 360 is going to Red Ring, you're not going to find out about it while it's turned off. You'll be playing a game; most likely a new game. So when the system finally breaks down...

"SUPER MEATBOY IS HAX GUYZ I WIL SUE"

So if you just bought a Kinect, and your system breaks down . . .

On the other hand, we do know Microsoft has a habit of denying any failures on its part until the unerring truth is shoved in their face. (Come to think of it, they denied the whole RRoD epidemic in the beginning, as well.) The incident that sticks in my mind is the (I believe it was--) BBC playing the watchdog, with the '360 scratches discs' report.

. . . so I wonder, will it be The Escapist, with a scathing 'Kinect DOES Cause Red Ring' report, this time around?

I'm sure that it's just coincidence because I have the old 360 (the one that doesn't have to chrome front on the disc tray) and the Kinect and I haven't had any problems out of it and I play the Kinect at least 2-3 hours a day.

Please note this is all purely speculation.

It is entirely plausible that the Kinect is causing problems. The data from Kinect is fed into the 360, and all of the calculations used by Kinect games are entirely performed on the 360 itself. Given the earlier generation 360's failure rate due to overheating, it is entirely possible that the Kinect may cause older 360s to fail due to pre-existing flaws. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with the Kinect device itself, it's just that the excessive calculations and, as Anton mentioned, excessive use since it's new, may help to bring down some of the older consoles. I'd at least recommend that anyone using Kinect with an older console give the 360 an occasional break. Turn it off and let it cool down (just like Kinect suggests you take a break) as a preventative measure.

Honestly, as much as I despise Microsoft, I'm going to side with them for now, at least until more data comes in. Fact is, if only 1 purchase has thus far been reported as "Causing" a red ring of death, then forgive me if I have a hard time believing that they didn't just have a case of bad luck.
