What hardware...?
The Wii itself.
So Microsoft is saying "Because we had an idea of a console with motion control input before the Wii was released, we can copy Nintendo's ideas?"
No, they said "we had the Avatar idea before the Wii existed," or rather that is what this one employee of Rare said.

Rare hasn't really backed up this claim, and it doesn't really matter who thought of what first, in business it's whoever gets their product/idea/concept out their first before rivals.

I like the xbox 360 avatars, but even if Rare did think of it first it looks like they're late to the party since they were released after Nintendo's Miis.

i just don't like the new interface that came with it...though i will probably get used to it eventually

i am curious why they included the avatars, are they going to be making use of them?

Breaking news: the vast majority of gamers care about whether or not Microsoft copied Miis.

Why is this random throwaway feature (and whether or not it was copied) such a huge deal for some people/publications?

Not that it really matters, but shigeru miyamoto came up with the mii idea back in the 80s.

Anyone who doesn't believe me look it up.

Matter of fact, here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mii

so M$ AND rare are full of horse excrement, as usual...They don't take risks like avatars and whatnot until they see that it is successful, and i don't believe for one second that they always had this in the pipeline.

I just wish they could put as much effort into making decent PC ports...

of course M$ are gonna say that. Truth is, microsoft have never released a truly original product; most of their computer stuff is ripped off apple, and most xbox stuff is a hash of what their competitors make
I'm guessing by your avatar that you're into sony, so I'll make this about them. Why is it that people get up in arms over the Avatars, but no one said a thing when Sony introduced Trophies?

EDIT:Scratch the first part, your avatar plus what you got on probation for have convinced me that you're not just into sony, but that you're a fanboy.

Wow you're cool and original for using $ instead of S!

On topic: No one really copied anyone, avatars are so common in the gaming world that saying Rare copied Nintendo's Miis is like saying that Halo copied Goldeneye by having the protagonist shoot people in first person.

Bottom line is that Nintendo didn't create the idea of using a fake person or creature to visually describe yourself with the same way Goldeneye didn't create the idea of the FPS, they're both just famous users of the idea.

Actually that's a good question, I would also like to know why there was no hubbub about that.

You know what the funny thing is? If Bettridge hadn't said anything, I never would've learned that Miyamoto had this idea for roughly 2 decades.

Way to fail, Rare. Just like you've been doing every since you left Nintendo in the first place.

Seriously though I intially thought "yeah what a ripoff" then I was like "eh it's not like avatars are an original idea anyway" which is now replaced by "wow way to lie your ass off"

Will Wright could probably wade into this about now and point out The Sims' debut date, and then whatever it was that preceded that could pop up too.

I'll ask again, why is it only MS that falls under this kind of scrutiny? $ony (see, I can be edgy that way too) has copied things too, as has Nintendo, as has MS, and as has every artist since the beginning of time. I'm sure you've heard this: good artists create, great artists steal.

No I give Sony a lot of flak for just about everything (like for instance how they're trying to convince people they did not totally copy Second Life minus all the cybersex, and how Trophies are achievements no matter how you look at it)

but this isn't really the place....this time.

I mean if we really wanted to get down to it, every company has stolen from Nintendo by the fact the D-Pad has been used on almost every controller since the NES (and the D-Pad was created for Game & Watch originally)

lol what did nintendo steal? Aside from the online shopping component, because everyone stole that from sega.

But almost every time nintendo is the first to do everything imho (aside from compact discs, Yamauchi really left them in the shit with that one).
