I love how all you have to do on the internet is make the claim and anyone will believe you. Just post it here as news and get a few pages of people blindly eating it all up. It's hilarious.

I'm not saying it's untrue (the 'news' article, that is) but holy shit, this place sure does like to be told supposed facts.

I'm reminded of a Bill Hicks skit wherein he discussed how gullible and brainwashed humans are, seeing news and TV reports as actual fact first and foremost, instead of digesting the information and deciding for ourselves what is and isn't true with further information and research. We just sit back and let the TV and internet tell us the truth, lol.

*Bill hicks singing*

"We are the puppet people! Put it on our TV, it's true. Put it on our TV it's true."

Go back to bed America, your government is in control. Here, watch this and get fat and stupid. And keep drinking bear, you fucking moron.
lolol

Hold on -

People DON'T pirate porn?
But that would imply that people actually pay for it.

Of course not.

In other news: did you hear - Microsoft actually found out one of their employees was downloading child pornography, but to avoid a scandal, they blocked her IP and didn't report it.

Crazy, huh.

When I read the headline I thought it meant that Microsoft were hiring the services of pirates.
So did I. It kinda implies that.

Files people on that website downloaded:
'Transsexual road trip 14' Cos 13 Transsexual road trips just wasn't enough.
'This ain't nurse Jackie'
'Zorah.wmv' ...Tali porn?

Yeah this is just really a sign that for some people, a jobs just a job
Or that not everyone agrees with everything their multinational employer has as its official policy.

I work for a software company that is in turn owned by a huge multinational. To me, my job isn't just a job. I love what I do and I love the company I do it for. But that doesn't stop me thinking the multinational that owns my company is a bunch of *censored just in case*. The unofficial policy of my company is to just ignore the more insane official policies of the multinational.

For example, I am supposedly banned from using dating sites for "security reasons". Without saying who I work for, I can tell you it's not bloody MI5!
Would you have an MS(or whatever multinational it is) IP then or whatever it was they're tracing?

The language problem is definitely on my part :D
What they've done here is take the list of IP addresses assigned to Microsoft, and checked out those with their list or torrenting addresses. Would your company, as owned by a multinational, have IP addresses associated with their multinational?

i would point out, there are massive problems with using ip's to identify specific people, or even machines
that may seem to be counter-intuitive but when you think about the assignment of ip's
and security in systems designed to regulate ip usage you soon see it's as nearly as easy as picking a post-it note off a cookie jar and swapping them around

there are browsers that will assign a new ip by bouncing you off it, for example:
https://www.torproject.org/projects/torbrowser.html.en

it is also possible to assign a specific program a new ip, and even refresh your own ip from inside windows

it would not be difficult to imagine people 'sabotaging' Microsoft's records by using their ip's
or by installing programs in their network with thumb drives or other portable devices to create network rule loopholes to exploit Microsoft's servers for their personal gain

i won't be specific, but it is entirely possible to hijack someone's ip as-well

this site 'youhavedownloaded' looks dodgy to me, it's pretty-much wrong
( iv'e tested several ip's known to have torrent activity, one of which has a 100megabit line and seeds goodness knows what all day ) which indicates to me that it's using some random search algorithm based off a torrent tracker and only shows about 1/10000th the information it should, or it's simply a malicious lie and displays random torrent tracker information designed to shock people into buying up security systems and encrypted vpn routers

i wouldn't set any stock by what that site says, and i doubt any network professional would either
( i am simply an pc enthusiast, myself )

Oh, I see! Sorry, the confusion arose from multiple definitions of the terms "IP" and "tracing", causing me to incorrectly parse the sentence.

And most probably yes. When we were bought, our network was pulled into the one belonging to our new owners. Which means that when I use the internet at work, I'm sitting in an office in the UK, but accessing websites via Israel. It's hilarious seeing "Find hot chicks near you in Raanana!" adverts.

Well now, for your sake I guess you'd better hope this story isn't true.

Because if it's actually true, well, that would mean you wasted multiple posts complaining and laughing about how gullible people are for absolutely no good reason. And that would sort of make you look like an idiot for questioning a truthful story without any evidence to suggest that it's false.

But thank goodness you have evidence to back up your assertions that perhaps this story isn't truthful. Right? I'm sure everyone would love to hear it.

Oh wait, silly me, you said "I'm not saying it's untrue", which removes the burden of proving your wild accusation, right? Wait, but then if you're not saying it's untrue, what exactly are you saying? Do your posts have a purpose, then, in that context, beyond a simple ego-trip?

Don't get me wrong. I absolutely respect your ability to be skeptical of news and not to trust every word you hear, but usually when you make a claim that the facts of a story are questionable, you actually have to provide evidence to back that claim of yours up. It's what's called "the burden of proof", and when you throw a story into question, that burden is on you to prove that the story isn't actually truthful. Which you not only didn't do here, but then you quickly added the sentence "I'm not saying it's untrue", which in the context of your post just makes both of your posts seem like a total waste of time. So you're not saying it's untrue but you're laughing at how gullible people are? Is that even on-topic? Does that sort of post have a purpose? I'm not sure it really does, unless you're trying to impress everyone with how anti-mainstream you are.
You answered your own question many times over. Your little knee-jerk rant simply missed it several times. If you had stopped and though about it for a few seconds, you'd have realized I didn't say it was right or wrong, only that I find it very amusing how everyone takes it (and anything else they see or hear) as a delivery of truth.

It has nothing to do with how accurate any of the information is (including this post) and everything to do with so very few people even considering that something may be wrong or an utter lie. So well trained is your average person that they'll actually read something or hear it and then go off and tell someone else about it almost word for word. Think about the number of times you've heard or seen someone do this or have done this yourself: see something reported, approach someone and say "Hey, did you hear about [blah blah]. The actual process of questioning things is skipped entirely and the information is considered fact the moment it's received.

Your little... bit, seemed to convey that you think it entirely acceptable to believe something until someone else can disprove it. So you, like many others, lack the very important steps mentioned above.

How it should go:

Step 1: receive information

Step 2: neither accept nor reject the claims until other, independent sources are collected

Step 3: weigh up the evidence and decide if there is substantial enough proof to believe any or all of the claim

Step 4: if there is not enough of said proof, ignore the information. If there is enough, register it as truth

How it goes for most people:

Step 1: receive information

Step 2: believe it

Again, I never said this story was untrue. I wasn't commenting on this particular story at all. I was commenting on the inanity of the modern citizen's willingness to be told what an outside source considers truth. Even the author of this article; they read their source and then relayed all that information here without even once suggesting it be anything other than fact. It's one long, self-confirming payload that sets out from the start to present "truth" and not to offer a potential truth--a very important difference.

That site is a joke. Even if they claim the data is real. I had the same static IP for 8 years and used a lot of bittorrent (worked nights for 5 of them so missed most of my 'stories';), and they got nothin'.
