Microsoft Exec Calls E3 a "Console Only" Show

PC gaming may not be dead but you sure wouldn't know it based on this year's Microsoft's [http://www.e3summit08.com/] Kevin Unangst, who described the event as a "console show."

In an article on Intel [http://venturebeat.com/2008/06/26/dont-expect-to-see-many-pc-games-at-upcoming-e3-game-show/] are having little to do with the 2008 show. Intel won't be holding any press conferences this year, while Microsoft elected to display its PC titles at an event in San Francisco this week, rather than risk being lost in the console crowd.

"As it has morphed, E3 has fundamentally become a console show," said Unangst, Microsoft's senior global director of Windows gaming. "We didn't want to just squeeze out some time at a console show."

The new console-centric attitude is largely the result of E3's transformation from the year's biggest, most anticipated gaming event to its current status as a press-only show with just a few thousand in attendance. The smaller scale has greatly reduced the cost of the event but also tightened the focus on high-profile products. Also impacting the presence of PC games at the show are the current troubles at the departure [http://www.theesa.com] of several members. Some will still attend the show, but others have dropped out entirely or will be holding parallel events of their own.

Unangst said that even with the reduced numbers in attendance, it's tough for PC titles to attract much attention. The Xbox 360 [http://www.gamesforwindows.com/]. Still, Unangst remained upbeat about the future of the PC platform, saying, "There have been a lot of trend pieces about how PC gaming is dying when that is absolutely not happening. It's growing exponentially, thanks to online games, and even faster than the rest of the market."

But Rahul Sood, chief of the Hewlett-Packard [http://www.voodoopc.com/], remains unimpressed by the "new" E3 and won't be attending. "E3 used to be the mecca of gaming," he said. "I'm skipping it because it's not what it used to be. Now it's just an event called E3."

I have to agree with Rahul Sood, E3 used to be a massive glorious and thoroughly entertaining event. Now it's just another expo lost in the crowd that while not boring or completely uninteresting is a shadow of it's former self, I don't really care whether it's now a console expo since the truth is that while E3 around the time of year used to be on every gamers lips now it's pretty much forgotten, which is a shame since it used to be such a great event.

It's a shame I'll never be able to go to an E3 when it was in its full glory. Has any event stepped up and tried to take E3's place, or are there just several events around the time?

Wait so did E3 just put a sign up saying "Oh yeah, no PC stuff btw! Kthxbye have fun!"? This just sounds odd.

All the poor PC gamers are being left outside in the cold with the wolves. Poor PC gamers.
That's alright, they can pass the time by ganking the wolves for quick level-ups...

If most of what's left is high profile console releases, how long before know one at all bothers with E3. Sony, M.soft and Nintendo aren't going to pay to be at E3 forever when they could run their own events and have ALL the limelight.

The "biggest" pc gaming event(biggest as in, most $$$ involved in the games) right now is Blizzcon. wow pretty much IS the mmo industry, starcraft II is expected to outsell pretty much any rts and the same applies to D3 for rpg's.

Now this post will inevitably summon a storm of replies that wow is repetitive but face it people: Your personal enjoyment of the game =/= blizzard's income.

Yeah and even if they are those big high-profile console releases, most of them have a PC version as well, and chances are, most PC gamers who go there, are going to gawk at the same things the Console gamers are, what's the difference? They will pick up a different version.

I doubt this is going to ignite a big console vs. PC war - after reading the first post you pretty much realize that it isn't PC gaming that is dead or whatever...it's E3 that is dead >_>

Besides, if the demographic there is Console Gamers, then whatever, if they put up a "Games for Windows" kiosk there, it's going to look more like you are trying to convert them than just promote your (crappy) product.

Considering how E3 shrank, that makes more room for the PC outside.
