Seems pretty stupid, actually.
It's just an activation system to prevent piracy. And that's patented?

What a broken patent system.
DON'T SAY IT. IT IS NOT BROKEN. PANTENT-TRON 9000 IS DISSAPPOINTED IN YOU.

*shoots you with laser*

But to be honest, it's been broken FOREVER. People can file blatantly obsure patents and then sue whenever something midly resembling that comes out.

Guys, guys.. So I have this totally awesome idea. I'm gonna patent oxygen and sue everyone on earth for breathing it. About as stupid as all these "patent infringements".

Is that not twice this month Microsoft has been sued and if I remembear correctly in the other case they had to settle, it would appear that Microsoft is lossing their touch.
Don't you mean that their lawyers are losing their touch?
Perhaps, but maybe it's just their ability to choose good lawers that is gone. Or even their ability to afford them.

Cue the people praising Uniloc for sticking it to the Man, and then they go play their PS3s.
That's low even for you man. Don't bring down an opposing console that has nothing to do with the subject at hand. Be a fanboy somewhere else.

As Cousin_IT said, it'll be appealed and Microsoft and the lawyers will win. Though I will laugh if Microsoft ends up having to pay for that, out of my less than better judgement...

Can I still patent the lungs? Or oxygen?

Money shall be mine!

Patents and copyright.. bleh. It's all greed and selfishness.

I agree that most of it is greed and selfishness, but a lot of patents are genuine inventions that need to have some protection. If it wasn't for patents, then you'd find 10 million different versions of Velcro and duct tape.

How is it news that Microsoft steals other people's ideas? That's pretty much their main business plan.
1. Locate a company with a neat idea.
2. Create and market a product based on that idea (without paying the originator).
3. Lather, rinse, repeat.
