What exactly does the sexual orientation have to do with gaming online, exactly? I must have missed a very important meeting sometime in the last few years.

Does the color of the skin matter as well? And wether we're left-wing or right-wing?
I agree, who gives a shit weather or not someone is gay, straight or otherwise.
I'm noy homophobic, nut it pisses me off when gay/lesbien people openly anounce their orinetation. As if to get a pat on the back or a congratulation for beiing ok about it and that eveeryone shoud accept them based on this rather than telling them to shut the hell up when we dont care.

Person 1: I'm gay
me: fuck off, I don't care
person 1: *gasp* homophobe
I agree
plus when people start talking about their sexual orientation, it makes me feel......uncomfortable.

I really think this is unnecessary-- not because I have a problem with openly gay gamers or anything-- it just sounds too facebook-y to me. Why can't XBL just be about pwning noobz anymorez?

Seriously...the only insult used on XBL is calling the other player "gay".
"Gay", "retarded", or any synonym of those two. That's it, really.

On topic, I'm actually rather pleased with this news. Now it's a matter of hoping simply stays used, and not abused.

I think this is a step in the wrong direction. Xbl doesn't need it. Definitely not.

And I'm not a homophobe, just thinks sexuality should stay the fuck away.

I think this is a stupid arguement. Yes its a fight for "rights" i suppose. But if you feel the need THAT MUCH to show your sexuality through your insignificant gamer tag to EVERYONE, your trying too hard. I personally dont care about peoples sexualities and have no wish to even know, i treat them all the same anyway, why does it matter? I think this is just nit picking, people much such a massive deal out of sexualities these days, iether its "sinfull" or its the best thing to ever happen to the universe ever. It is niether, it simply is. People in america hate homosexuals and their alliance decides to fight for the right to express it in their gamertag. Priorities people. Priorities. No one cares what you are, i feel sorry for anyone that desperate to shout about their sexuality to everyone and anyone and shove it in their faces, we accept you for who you are, get on with your life like everyone else.

Almost nothing. Which is why people were upset that Microsoft had such strict rules regarding it.

Edit: oh, and there was a meeting. basically a bunch of gay people told Microsoft that "hey, your policy of banning any mention of sexual orientation isn't doing anything to prevent harassment, all it's really doing is pissing us off." then Microsoft was like "oh ok we'll look into maybe changing that" and now they have.

To be honest, your sexuality is irrelevant whilst your gaming but thats just my opinion.
Same here. I don't know why anybody would want to label themselves and be defined by that one thing alone, especially on the Internet.

Is a bit pointless.
Not that it shouldn't be allowed but i don't see why people would want to advertise their sexuality in their gamertags.

Ok I gotta say I genuinely don't see why anyone would want to put their sexual orientation/religion etc. in their gamertag.I mean it's just a gamertag not a social networking site
Ah, you may not have noticed it, but xbox live IS turning into a social network. (one could easily argue that it's already a well defined social network) Social gaming (ei 1 vs 100), those new windows live phones, improvements in communication (ei. improved friend's list, sending messages, group chat etc..) being able to tie your gamertag with other social networks etc.. are all signs that XBL is trying to become more and more social.

OT: Good for Microsoft, change won't happen if you don't stir the pot.

I'm wondering how they will deal with people with will continue to harrass homosexuals regardless. Maybe something like the report button we have? Hope they have all this worked out...

I think this has no place personally. Regardless of straight or not, you don't need to advertise it in a game where it has no place.

PC FTW. Steam name: n***** beating fagtron all teh way.

But seriously, that kinda censorship is bull. Freedom of speech much?
When you play on XBL you agree to follow their terms and conditions. Those terms and conditions include a code of conduct. That code limits how you may behave and what you may say. In other words no one has freedom of speech on XBL and if you break the terms you agree to then XBL can remove you. Your alternative is to NOT accept the terms and not play.

Your choice.

Seems to me that Microsoft is ready to put an end to the cesspit of humanity that was accidentally created.

This may be true but at the end of the day it's primarily for gaming so surely things like race/religion etc. are irrelevant. Not saying it shouldn't be allowed but I really can't see the point either.Nor can I see why anyone would want to mention their race or sexuality on a service that's notorious for racism and homophobia
