Microsoft refers to core audience as "Sweaty thirty year olds in Metallica t-shirts"

Slightly OT, I'm starting to feel a little bit creeped out. This is the second thing that YZ has indirectly foreshadowed a topic (first being the Duke Nukem Forever announcement). Almost two weeks ago YZ said that he wanted to retire the term "gamer" because of the negative stereotype. Now we fast-forward to today where this pops up.

Should probably make use of this

I'm not succumbing to this. Honestly people, don't react. It's what they want.
Why would they want their core audience to be pissed at them?
They don't care, because they know that said core audience will still just keep throwing money at them no matter what they say.

Oh gamer persecution complex. How wonderful you are, taking offense to something because you, not the person who said it, applied it to a large group of gamers. I hope it never goes away.
Its hilarious, but I for one hope the stereotype goes away because its still not cool to admit your a gamer. Whoever I meet that figures out Im a gamer before they actually know me well always thinks "oh he has no life and would never want to go to a party with us" or something along those lines. I just game in my spare time when Im done with homework and no one is around or already has plans.

I am a 21 year old dude in Ruff Riders t-shirt and I don't sweat. I also train marshal arts and I don't give my money to Microsoft. Stereotype crushed.
You say you train in martial arts, but I can tell that's bullshit because a) You spelt it wrong and b) You apparently don't sweat.

And yes, shame on you Microsoft.
Can we fire this guy now?

He doesn't play on Xbox Live. Obviously.
Yeah, I was convinced they were scrawny 12 year olds screaming profanities and racial slurs all day.

OT: Lately I think Activision and Microsoft are in a competition to see who can put the biggest foot in their mouths.

"Gaming's not just for sweaty thirty year olds in Metallica t-shirts," quipped Microsoft's regional entertainment tzar at yesterday's lifestyle event, David McLean. The audience of fashion editors and lifestyle doyens yukked it up appreciatively, but we couldn't believe our ears. That's it? That's what you're reducing a huge percentage of your audience to now - a one-liner gag to make the cheap-seats feel it's okay to waddle about in front of their television sets?

Wow...just wow Microsoft. Way to perpetuate gross and out-dated stereotypes about your core audience.
I warned you... Didn't I warn all of you!

This is what console gaming does to you, they ALWAYS fuck over the core to appeal to the larger/more-lucrative demographic. PC gaming for the win.

I don't know, but I'm reminded by the famous phrase, "any media attention is good media attention." Or something like that.
Or because they make money no matter what, and no one will get serious enough about anything like this that they will stop doing well. I can't help but admire that they have this many people pissed, (apparently) but still buying their products. That's just me though!

god, you guys are such whiners. The statement is explicitly saying that you guys, as gamers, are NOT sweaty thirty year olds. He's saying that the gaming landscape has changed since it's early days.

Why are you guys getting all butthurt about this? C'mon guys, surely you guys are more secure about yourselves than this.

Microsoft is trying so damn hard to edge their way into the casual market, they don't care who they throw under the bus to get there.

It's going to be hilarious to watch Microsoft's stock dive after reporting poor Kinect sales next quarter.

I'm in my 30's I don't own a Metallica Tee, and I hardly sweat, I glow. Whomever said this guy's never been on Xbox Live is right. I cringe and all the screechy pubescent voices ringing in my ears whenever people start bickering about who gets to use the Torque-bow or people getting pissy about losing an All You Can Quaff (oh absurdity!).

I read that in Shin-chan's voice. I tried not to, but I couldn't help myself. Your avatar and your statement just seem to.... match....

That's cute, Microsoft, real cute. I know the whole of Microsoft isn't responsible for that comment, nor Mr. Gates, but that doesn't change the fact that this guy was allowed past the radar. Way to use old stereotypes to launch into a tirade about the "future" which is really the sterile, Nintendoed past, and dip all other ways of gaming (many of which Microsoft pioneered) into an easily hatable general category.

No really, thanks guys.

fuck them, I'm not 30, nor am I particularly sweaty... and Megadeth are way better than Metallica.

But seriously, it is unreasonable to expect Microsoft's marketing department to be anything but a pack of whores who'll shamelessly suck up to any new potential sugardaddy. They don't really have souls, instead they have inbuilt programs allowing them to scan potentially receptive arses to kiss. I'm annoyed at this new slander, but it is a tired, well-tended annoyance and comes as no surprise to me.

I find the entirety of the microsoft gaming devision to be comperable to the head executive character in Game Dogs (can't remember his name, Mr somethingorother, the scatterbrained one that got shot in the head in the last episode).

Totally out of touch and just there for the cash.

The funny thing is I am actually wearing a Metallica t-shirt right now.
