Yep, I agree 100%.

"Microsoft calls hardcore gamers sweaty thirty year olds in Metallica shirts."

Nope, that's what some guy on the internet said, not Microsoft.

You guys are all pretty silly. Go wash the sand out of your......
Given the context and how he said "Gamings not just for sweaty thirty year olds in Metallica t-shirts." I think it's not far-fetched at all to consider the aforementoned steretype as a reference to Microsofts current demographic.

And to reiterate, I don't think anyone here is actually offended or hurt by the comment. I, personally, just think it's an example of fail PR by Microsoft.
Nope, this is a bunch of people on the internet overreacting. They may not be hurt or offended, but they are angry. It is silly.

The funny thing is they all seem to agree with Microsoft.

Read the first sentence in that quote

"Gaming's not just for sweaty thirty year olds in Metallica t-shirts,"

he was saying that there were probably sweaty 30 year olds in metallica t shirts but he was acknowledging that there also weren't. Its a true statement because its non specific and impossible to either prove/disprove.

Seriously guys, the way that is worded is like he's saying "Gamers aren't all like that, the stereotype isn't true."

People are saying this is M$ trying to get shock publicity, I'd say it's more like that writer creating controversy by quoting a single line out of context and making a big deal out of it.

Oh gamer persecution complex. How wonderful you are, taking offense to something because you, not the person who said it, applied it to a large group of gamers. I hope it never goes away.
Only this man seems to understand this. Why are gamers so incredibly sensetive?

Why would they want their core audience to be pissed at them?
I don't know, but I'm reminded by the famous phrase, "any media attention is good media attention." Or something like that.
That phrase is wrong. I highly doubt that getting your core audience pissed at you will get them to buy more of your stuff. There's a difference between trolling and just being retarded.
You've got to understand that there's far more profit for Microsoft in the casual games industry than sticking to the core. Cracking a joke at the expense of your fans and customers isn't much to them if it makes people willing to fork out money for that shit.
I realize that, but "hardcore gamers," by which I mean people who buy Halo instead of Wii have been fueling Microsoft for years. What the man insinuated is that if you're not a casual gamer and if you aren't interested in Kinect, you're probably a sweaty 30 year old wearing a Metallica t-shirt. Once the novelty wears off in a couple years or if the Kinect isn't the big hit they hope it will be, their casual audience wont want it, so their basically insulting their past and probably future fanbase. I'm not insulted, but I'm astounded that they would use such bad business tactics.
Hey. This is a company that managed to have hundreds of thousands of fans screaming about the great customer service, after having their 360 shit itself to death. (My friend is having his fourth one replace, and there is no sign of him relenting, and perhaps picking another more reliable console.) Microsoft is arrogant, and definitely doesn't see very far ahead, if it think that casual gamers would ever stick long term with it. Not that Sony aren't, but Microsoft's attitude displayed here is a sign that they are starting to care a lot less about their core fans.

I'm not in my 30's and furthermore, I'm not wearing a Metallica shirt. It's a Simpson's shirt in the style of The Sopranos.

There's far more money in the casual gamers market. If it makes casual gamers more willing to buy Kinect, it's worth insulting their core fanbase. At least, that's how it looks to me. hell, Microsoft lost my trust after my friend ordered his fourth 360 replacement. I'm not exactly understanding why they would even make such a petty jibe.

Yeah well, Microsoft has been systematically killing off anyone that they could possibly market this to. They insulted the strong gamer population, then the Kinect doesn't work to get fat people in shape, and it doesn't work for teens because it doesn't take baggy clothing well (haha, that was a joke) so really Microsoft, betting everything you have in the casual family gamers for this probably won't work, because you were beaten to it by the Wii. I'm really angry now. I don't consider myself a hardcore gamer though, because I don't have a Metallica shirt.

It's Microsoft. They only ever got a few things right, and even they are riddled with bugs and security issues. Who could seriously expect them to do proper PR?

i hope yahztee's right
that this is just a stage that gaming will have to go through to get casual games/gamers, motion controls and 3d games out it's system

Hurray for out of context quoting of a lame joke!

He was playing on the stereotype that many people still have of gamers and saying that gaming has moved on from that, but I suppose "Microsoft man makes crappy joke" wouldn't have got this thread so many views, hm?

True. "Microsoft refers to core gamers as..." would have been a more apt title in hindsight. While he didn't outright call their core fanbase as such, I think he certainly refered to them as so. Yes, it was a lame joke, but more to the point, it was a lame joke at the expense of their established user-base.

They're trying to undo that stereotype with Kinect, but at the expense of the current audience.
As opposed to?

The "Hardcore Gamers" have expressed some pretty negative stuff about Kinect, alot of people just aren't going to buy it. We are not Kinects Audience!, the people out there that do have these backward views are.
Could you imagine if Microsoft Employees took these kind of reactions to what the public say about them.
Jesus, nothing would get done.

I'll be pretty happy to put down some cash that Microsoft don't think that their core audience is like that. (Although if you read this thread, a few of them are)
This is just one of those knee jerk posts in response to a comment you wouldn't normally hear, everyone already thinks games are for those kinds of people.Somebody just outright says it & they're in the industry no less, all hell breaks loose.

Gamers just need to come down off their pedestal and realise they don't make omelette without breaking a few eggs.
Kinect could eventually make gaming a more accepted household name, something families do together.
It starts off with games like Wii Sports sure, but the games will move away from those titles once the industry finds their footing with it.

The only people at fault in this thread are the gamers.

It's no surprise that one employee said something stupid. It's happened with Nintendo with that one woman... I forget who.

Microsoft don't need to make lame quips at anybodies expense.

I'm personally all in favour of opening up the medium to larger audiences. If Microsoft does this with Kinect, while at the same time retaining what we enjoy about the medium, then that's cool with me. I wont buy Kinect. Like you said, it's not for people like me, but I don't particularly take umbrdige with it.

What I do find surprising is that Microsoft are willing to pander to these lifestyle big-wigs at the expense of their core audiences. They don't need to do this. They're perfectly able to market Kinect to this audience at the expense of nobody at all. The fact they make their established audience the butt of a lame joke to score brownie points with the sort of people who read celebrity magazines is just...quite baffling really.

Why are you surprised?

Team Ninja tried to sell Ninja Gaiden 2 with tits, I didn't see women getting up in arms about it (They probably did).
Companies do these things quite frequently, every group of people is at some point the butt of a joke.
It was a minor remark, and an even minor slight that people are getting pretty pissed at for no real reason.
