Microsoft Will Make a Profit on Every Kinect

Despite a fairly hefty price tag, Kinect will not be a loss leader product, says Microsoft.

It's taken a few hundred million in development costs, and the hard work of around a thousand people, but Microsoft's head of interactive entertainment Don Mattrick says that the company will make a profit on every Kinect [http://www.amazon.com/Kinect-Sensor-Adventures-Xbox-360/dp/B002BSA298/ref=sr_1_1?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1288037597&sr=1-1] it sells.

The prototype for Kinect apparently cost around $30,000 to make, but Microsoft has managed to bring that price down a tad, to somewhere in the region of a hundred and fifty bucks. We don't know exactly how much profit Microsoft will be making on each Kinect box, but it seems reasonable to assume it's not going to be a huge amount. But with consumer interest thought to be very high for Kinect, and some retailers reporting that all their stock is accounted for [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104336-UK-Retailer-Runs-Down-Kinect-Reserves] before the device is even available, even fifty cents on each box is soon going to add up.

Microsoft has spent a lot on Kinect - the marketing budget alone weighed in at $400 million [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/104479-Microsoft-Spending-400-Million-on-Kinect-Launch] - so it's going to be a while before it fully recoups the cost. But with the profit from the hardware sales, not to mention software sales and Xbox Live Gold subscriptions, it's going to be sooner than you might have thought.

Kinect hits shelves, and then apparently flies straight off them again, on November 4th.

They can take someone elses money as profit. This game is not produced or marketed for me. I'll stick to Civ 5...

Good? I think...

I mean... that's how a business works right? Sell stuff to make money to sell more stuff...

Sounds like a bit of a obvious point to make.

Wah? Confus...

I never said I was in favor of this...

But still you really cannot deny that the guys behind Codename D have a hell of a track record.
It's worth watching just because of the devs involved.

Also Steel Battalion Heavy Armor is by Capcom. I freaking love Capcom, so this game is worth a watch too in my eyes.

Plus there's a couple of horror titles for anyone out there who is a big horror gamer.

I'm not fussed about Kinect, but if they get more dev teams and publishers of that calibre working on it then I think we'll actually see some awesome titles.

Console sale model for a while (unless you're Nintendo) has to sell the consoles at a loss and make money off of the software sales, especially early in a consoles life since they're so expensive to make - if you're in a position where a new console will probably sell like hotcakes and it's expensive enough for you to profit before selling any software, you're well set for (commercial, at least) success.

Here's hoping it bombs and they learn a valuable lesson.
What valuable lesson is there for them to learn? They're not ditching the hardcore gaming crowd (God, I hate that term), they're just reaching out to another group altogether. If you don't like the Kinect simply don't buy it, but it could actually do a lot of good by introducing more people to gaming by targeting such a casual market like the Wii.
Exactly.
I'm pretty sick of how defensive us "hardcore" gamers are of our precious games. I'm glad that new people will be introduced in to gaming as a result of this device. I will also not be purchasing it any time soon.

Whatever happened to the first Xbox 360 motion camera? Did everyone forget about it, or did I just imagine it? I remember Totemball could use it and that Spyglass board games could use it...

Anyways, for all the people who say they want it to bomb, I understand how you feel but I disagree. Yes, the kinect will likely have no good games, but if it does bomb, then a lot of people will likely be losing jobs. Most of them aren't at fault for microsoft jumping on the motion bandwagon either. And, as the Extra Credits episode on the subject pointed out, bombing would mean that there will be a pretty big backlash given how much money was spent on the project.

My gawd I want motion sensor gaming to go away. Controllers and keyboards, thats how you play a game. Yahtzee made a good point when he saud immersion is when you can flick your thumb and the game reacts, not you have to jump around and flail your arms to get a reaction.

Codename D. that may be good but i haven't seen anything so im going to assume that it will suck. that way if they prove me wrong it will be awesome.

Steel Battalion... they raped the franchise. did you ever play the original? if not then go play your motion controlled remake. il be playing with 6 pedals and 2 sticks. (seriously THAT was the controller)

and even though im an unrepentant sony fanboy. i hate the Move as well. i just hate ALL motion controls. (i need buttons!)
